Eley Benchrest Gold

I see there is some Eley Benchrest Gold for sale in the classified Ads. Now if I remeber correctly back in the 80's there was Eley benchrest Gold, Eley benchrest, and Tenex all for sale at the same time. Does anyone know what the difference was supposd to be between the three ammo's ? :confused:
 
I would like to add a question to yours.

Does anyone know the shelf life of Eley? I ask cause I have some Club, Pistol Match and 10X from the 80's that will not group and the lube looks like crap.

I don't remember any Eley Benchrest but Benchrest Gold and Tenex were the same ammo. Just a different package for Tomart Inc. who used to be the importer and owned the Benchrest Gold name.
 
Bought some when it first showed up and when I peeled the Benchrest Gold label off it was stuck on over the tennex label so that they could charge more for the same ammo.
 
Eley BR-50 shelf life

I still have have almost a case of Eley BR-50 that I bought back in 98'. The stuff still shoots great, but I also would like to know what the shelf life of 22 ammo is. I have it stored in the cellar where it is faily cool and not damp.

When I started shooting BR-50 in 1994 I bought some Eley Benchrest at a local gun shop. It shot best of all ammo's I tested in my old Martini that I started in this sport with. When I went back to the shop to buy some more I was told Eley no longer made it. About then or mid-1995 I found Eley Benchrest Gold was most popular with most of the top shooters so I bought a case. I was told that when Eley tested 10x, those lots that shot the best were sold to I think it was Tomart where they relabeled them Benchrest Gold. Tomart (I think it was was run by a gentleman who was an Olympic medalist if my memory serves). By mid-1996 Lapua Midas became the rage. I remember the first time I tested it I couldn't believe my eyes how much better it shot than Benchrest Gold. Midas had been called Dominator up till then but due to patent problems they had to change the name. Midas Seemed to be the dominate ammo at the ARA Nationals until a year or two after Eley came out with EPS.

I've never found any .22 ammo to go bad if stored properly. Sometimes the lube starts to look a little aged.

I shot that ammo when it first came out and it was really good. Then as it became more popular it lessend in quality. Like all ammo it was in lots. I believe it was a lot that tested well at X velocity , Then relabeled as gold
It sure wasen't cheap at $10 a box.
 
So I'm going to guest that Eley Benchrest was just Black Box Match relabeled.
I still have a box of the Eley Benchrest there only one label on it.

This has only the Bench Rest Gold Label not duplicate labels, need to know what you are talking about sometimes, it is a step up from R 50. Don Grim
