Travel tips to avoid downtown St Louis and dirt roads (traveling from southeast)
After blindly letting my GPS lead me to Benchrest Rifle Club of St Louis several times, enduring downtown St Louis and spending many miles on dirt roads I finally figured out the best route when driving up from Nashville through Paducah. Thought I might pass this on for anyone who might want to avoid such miseries.
Driving east on I-64 (in Illinois) take exit 7 onto I-255N
Take exit 30 to I-270W
Take exit 20A-20B to I-70W
Take exit 199, turn right then left on service road
Take right on Bell Road (next to American Bank of Missouri)
Take left on County Farm Road
Take right on Kohn Road and follow it to the end
From my experience ignore GPS until you turn on Bell Road. Once you make that turn you should be able to let it lead you the rest of the way.
Google maps says this route is a slightly longer, but from my experience I would consider selling my firstborn to avoid the Mississippi River bridge in downtown St Louis. Garmin GPSs seem to always take you on a bunch of long dirt roads once you exit from I-70, and the Bell Road route keeps you on paved roads.
