downloading a huge case

I want to download some 338 Lapuas to 1800fps using the 300gr bullet. I'm testing terminal performance of the 300gr Berger OTM's.

I know Lynn Dragoman has tried the fluffy powders (Trailboss?) in some large stuff, have you tried a 338L? Anyone else? My books don't show any combination of components that matches closely enough for me.....

I have access to a 338 Win Mag 10" twist, maybe this is easier??

Hi Al....try this....37 gr of either 2400 or 4759.......40 gr lil gun.....28 gr or either Universal Clays--Unique--Long Shot....these shuld give the vel you seek...I like the 2400 best of all...it gives good case fill vs. the others (which work good)...I like to have the case aprox 1/2 full or more so that I cant double charge one !!!!!....2400 has the perfect combo of charge wt/case fill/ with its "fluffyness" to charge wt. ratio.....Roger
PS...and just about everyone who loads ammo has a can of 2400 on the shelf or it is available at any gunshop, even wal-mart...pretty handy

AIIyy-yaiy-yaiy-yaiy-YAIYYYY and WHOAHHH BACK!!!

Are you saying for me to put a half case of shotgun powder under a 300 grain bullet??? Seems like I'd blow my face back clear to the neck..... is this some method I've never heard of?

Al the straight 338 Lapua Magnum holds 37 grains of TrailBoss to the very top of the neck.It doesn't seem to compress as well as other powders so 33-35 grains is all you'll likely get into a case with a 300 grain bullet and normal freebore.

I am using 6 grains of it in my 300 Whisper as that is all I can cram in there with a 210 grain bullet and the velocity is only 500 fps.My first shot was at 4.5 grains and the bullet never made it out of the barrel. It has very little recoil and with Muffs the only thing you hear is the firing pin moving inside the bolt.Accuracy is two in one hole at a 100 yards followed by one shot that is 15 feet short of the target and one shot over the top by a good foot.Nothing like 16 foot groups at 100 yards so I went back to Lil Gun at 10.4 grains and 1.3 inch groups.

I don't know if you will get 1800 fps out of it but will see if I have any 300 grain bullets laying around to try it out.If you try it out first let us know what happens.

Why are you after 1800 fps? I ask because Ajaxx45 has a 338 Whisper based on the 6BR case that is right around 1000 fps.

I'm testing terminal ballistics, no one seems to know what this bullet will do to an animal at 1200yds

Al we killed deer out to 1800 yards with various 338's using the 300 sierra. Sometimes they open and sometimes they pass through but they usually kill. After reading a post on long range hunting, a guy said he believes when the holes are open on the hollow point they open up. I looked at my bullets and half of them are plugged with something and that is about the number that don't seem to open. Last fall my buddy took Keven Crams hollow point tool and cleaned the holes out and shot two deer at 850 to 900 yards and they opened. The yardage was a little closer then 1200 and they were shot with 338-378 Weatherby at 3050 fps. Keven's tool is made for cleaning up after meplating and it cleans out hole and slightly chamfers it. I think his website is Montour county rifles. Matt

OK, I did some research with the cast bullet guys. I'm thinking Roger and Lynn are onto something. I'm going to carefully try me some shottygun powder under a 300gr bullet.

Al,
Is there no place around you where you can simply test by shooting the distance that you want to know about?
Boyd

Boyd ...he is wanting to do tissue damage analysis....it is hard to hit a specimen in exactly the right spot at 1200 yds....we did all sorts of cadaver testing bak in the 60's with reduced vel. ( to mimic down range hits) ammo.....Roger

Well yeahh but.... I can shoot out to 1400yds right here at home but unlike some of the shooters here I have trouble getting my rounds centered in the medium at that range :)

Roger's got it, he's obviously BTDT

338 Win Mag Lyman cast bullet data shows IMR 4895- 249gr gas checked bullet-41.0gr/1835fps to a maximum of 46.0gr/2044fps. The maximum for cast is because above 2000 fps, you will lead the barrel, not a pressure problem. The 275gr. Jacketed data-IMR 4895-starting 54.0gr-2252fps Maximum-60.0gr/2469fps. Loading 45.0 gr of IMR 4895/300gr jackets should get you in the 1800 fps range. H4895 should work also. Just a guess on my part. Get someone with QuickLoad to run the data.
