Does anyone make a backplate spider for a D1-4 spindle?

I am looking for a Gunsmith backplate spider for the D1-4 camlock. Grizzly sells a nice one for the D1-5 and 6, but not the 4.

Any help would be appreciated. :)
Thanks,
Jeff

Make your own. I removed the backplate from my 4J and machined this one to fit in it's place. swapping back to the 4J takes about 2 minutes. I never need them both at the same time so this worked out great.

Notice there are no bolts sticking out of mine to grab you and wrap you around the axle so to speak. The Grizzly one looks like a safety hazard to me. One is always working in close proximity to the spinning spider when chambering so those bolts should be enclosed like mine are.

I made this one out of a 1-1/8" thick piece of 6" rod end. The spider bolts are 3/8-24. since the picture was taken I've put brass tips in the bolts. The clearance hole for the bolt head goes all but 1/2" of the way to the center. That last 1/2" is tapped for the spider bolts.

I made the spider without a back plate. I just machined the cam lock into the spider. I found the specs somewhere and went at it. The first thing I did was machine a stub for a gauge to check the fit. Works pretty good I think. I will try and attach a couple pics.

If you can, steal some bolts from another chuck or something for the camlock. I checked on the price of them through MSC, they are almost $30 each, yikes!!

Now why didn't I think of that...actually Don, a D1-4 spindle has only 3 pins, so removing three pins from the D1-5 backplate should get you there without any other modifications.

Oops, that is embarrassing, I own a D1-4 and thought it had 4 pins........ come to think of it, it is a 3 pinner.

Now, the big question is the pin circumferencial diameter placement the same for both D1-4s and D1-5s or is that what the 4 and 5 in the designation stands for?.........Don

The specs I have show the D1-4 has a bolt circle of 3.25" with 5/8" pins, and the D1-5 is 4.125" with 3/4" pins.

There is a good spec sheet on Shopswarf.com. Thank Jerry Sharrett for the link. Lots of good info on there to read.
