Sunday August 13th, the Airgunners held our first 50 yard Bench Rest shoot at DeSoto Gun Club. The morning started out sultry, with high humidity and temps near 80 at Sunrise; typical for southwest Florida in August. A light breeze made things slightly more tolerable. Colin and Jack devised a way to utilize the same target stands they constructed for our 25 meter competitions. Many hands lightened the load and with Colin's work and directions we had the range set and ready to shoot by 9:15 AM.
We had 11 shooters this week. I was pleased to see some new faces on the benches. New shooters Angie Gardner, Tom Cuff, and DJ Marks made the trip from the Tampa area to test their skills at 50 yards.
Per the USARB regulations, each contestant shot three official target cards, each card consisting of 25 scored targets. At 50 yards distance any mistake gets exaggerated. Wrongly guessing wind drift, having a canted hold, or a unintentional jerk on the trigger would send the pellets on a path far away from their intended destination. It was a learning experience that combined fun and frustration for both the shooting veterans and the newcomers. We can't wait to try it again !
Jack and Colin did a fantastic job marshaling the days event. Hats off also to Paul S and to Bill S for handling the scoring duties. The entire match ran safely, smoothly, and without protest or incident.
By the end of the shoot temps were over 93. Everyone pitched in to put our toys away. I was ready for an ice-cold drink about the size and shape of North America.
