Depth micrometer questions

I've located a used Starrett 449 depth micrometer set----0 to 6" range, non-rotating blades.

I like the idea of being able to get the blades into smaller places but have questions about the ease of making accurate measurements, as compared to the conventional models with round rods.

I'd appreciate opinions from folks that have used both types.

Thanks.

If it was me and I was looking at using it for gun work I would go with a regular Starrett 440.

Look to see if the blades

are bent.. Wide or narrow base. If they are used and you can get them for a really reasonable price. Say 1/3 to 1/2 of what they would sell at new, buy them.

All in all they aren't any better than the 440's. No real advantage other than the blades don't rotate.

Thanks for the replies

I appreciate getting good information.

Love mine!

I bought a non- rotating one a couple of years ago, I guess 449 must be the number. I much prefer it to the rotating one I have, especially for measuring to the bolt face, and barrel tennon shoulder. It doesn't roll off, just stops dead if I do my part.
