Definite Newbie Questions..

Been lurking around here for a couple months now trying to gain some knowledge on benchrest and now I have some questions. Yesterday I built a shooters table based on an article I read here. It is 33 inches tall and is shaped like a T. Next I want to build a target-holder. Can someone tell me the specs for a "target-holder"? Are there specifications? What do you staple the target to(been using cardboard)?

Next, I'm fortunate enough to live in the country and I'm able to shoot just outside my back door on the range that I have made. I have a piece of steel behind my targets now so that my bullets won't eat up my pines, but i'm looking for another idea of catching the lead. I don't want a big pile of dirt on the property, so any ideas would be appreciated. I'm hoping to compete soon along with my 11 year old daughter (I think she will outshoot me with practice).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Stable backers is the wording in the rules. Some use tarboard, some use cora plast...Coragated plastic like they use for outdoor signs. Colecting lead is a problem for everyone. Don't know if there is a good answer. Some comercial ranges use a pool of water below the angled backstop but for an individual, it may be more trouble than it is worth.

Railroad ties sand and rubber belting

We built a backstop at shooting buddies farm with the above components and in 15 years nothing has gone though it including a 460WBY solids. Make a box, his is 8' h x 3'w x 8' l with the RR ties fill with sand and face impact area with rubber belting (go to a grain mill, rock quarry or a local factory and ask for the belting) most are willing to get it out of the trash bin (Takes up too much space). Move the targets around so your not drilling the same hole and change out a couple ties every few years......btw his is at 100 yds. He has a dirt berm at 600yds.(dugout base of hill actually):D
