It was another beautiful day for shooting up on the mountain with temps running in the mid 70’s under bright and sunny skies with a very manageable breeze, plus low humidity. We had 8 shooters arrive for our IR 3-Gun Match, then 4 for the Airgun match that followed.

This was our 5th and final IR monthly match of the season and we saw Al Hadfield take full command early on and stay in control throughout the day as he cleaned all 3 events as shown in the results below.

SPORTER CLASS
1.) AL HADFIELD 245-11x
2.) Penny Hadfield 243-15x
3.) Dave Shattuck 239-7x

4.) Paul Bendix 238-3x
5.) Michael Gallant 235-9x
6.) Roger Gagnon 229-2x
7.) Barry Wood 198-1x

10.5# CLASS
1.) AL HADFIELD 249-14x
2.) Paul Bendix 248-12x
3.) Dave Shattuck 246-11x

4.) Penny Hadfield 244-11x
5.) Michael Gallant 243-9x
6.) Roger Gagnon 243-6x
7.) Doug Shea 241-9x
8.) Barry Wood 204-3x

13.5# CLASS
1.) AL HADFIELD 249-14x
2.) Doug Shea 247-9x
3.) Paul Bendix 246-9x

4.) Penny Hadfield 245-11x
5.) Dave Shattuck 239-8x
6.) Michael Gallant 238-8x
7.) Roger Gagnon 232-4x
8.) Barry Wood 220-2x

Please note how both of Al’s 10.5 and 13.5 pound Class wins were with identical scores. Not only that, but his First Miss in the 10.5# was on target #12 while in the 13.5# it was on #15. Talk about being consistent. Nice shooting Al!!!!

Our next IR match is in just 2 short weeks and will be the NEW HAMPSHIRE IR 50/50 3-GUN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP on September 11th. Look for the announcement here on Benchrest Central for more details.

Following our IR match came the last Airgun match of the season, and probably one of the finest exhibitions of shooting I have ever witnessed. Let me tell you, enough good can not be said about what Dan Brown did to us during that competition.

But first let’s take a minute to compare statistics: here you have 3 competitors shooting highly tuned Theoben PCP’s, each with multiple 250’s to their credit both in Rimfire and Airgun and having years of benchrest experience behind them, 2 of whom were shooting off of state-of-the-art one-piece rests while the 3rd was using a more typical 2-piece rest system and who had shot 2, yes 2 750 Aggregate scores during Indoor competition …and then there was Dan.

Dan is new to benchrest this year and was shooting off of a sandbag mounted on a riser block for a front rest and just a plain old sandbag for a rear. His gun of choice was the new FX Independence that requires him to lift the gun completely off of the rest, pump it 3 times, then resettle it back into the bags between each shot, a gun that fell apart during our last match. None of this seemed to matter much as he totally cleaned our clocks winning all 3 targets handily, plus taking the Aggregate by 12 points over the second place finisher. Granted, since our last match Dan had to totally rebuild the pump section of his gun as that was what had come apart a month ago causing me to post a warning about purchasing an FX Independence after the match due to my concern for what seemed to be a poor quality of materials being used issue, but lucky for Dan he is very capable with doing whatever needs to be done to repair a gun, plus he’s extremely open minded when it comes to thinking outside of the box. Dan also happened to mention how he had replaced the standard FX smoothbore barrel with a fine shooting BSA barrel that he had gotten through one of their after market specialists. Seems to have been a good choice all the way around.

Now let’s take a look at just how bad it was for the rest of us while keeping in mind that we shot the AGBR target for our first target followed by 2 of the World Rimfire and Airgun Benchrest Federation targets to finish out our season.

AGBR TARGET
1.) DAN BROWN 248-5x
2.) Paul Bendix 247-3x
3.) Doug Shea 245-3x

4.) Dave Shattuck 243-1x

WRABF TARGET #1
1.) DAN BROWN 247-4x
2.) Paul Bendix 244-7x
3.) Doug Shea 242-11x

4.) Dave Shattuck 238-6x

WRABF TARGET #2
1.) DAN BROWN 248-13x
2.) Doug Shea 245-10x
3.) Dave Shattuck 241-8x

4.) Paul Bendix 240-5x

3-TARGET AGGREGATE
1.) DAN the MAN BROWN 743-31x
2.) Doug Shea 732-24x
3.) Paul Bendix 731-15x

4.) Dave Shattuck 722-15x

There you have it for whatever it’s worth. And another fine seasons of monthly benchrest matches, both rimfire and airgun, has drawn to a close.

Excellent shooting Dan and a fine job repairing the FX or should we call it the FX/BSA , no matter what good job all around.

Wow

You guys are making that international target look way too easy. Great shooting.

The only thing I'll say about the International target, and I probably am not the guy who should be saying this, is that the X's are easier than on the AGBR target as you only have a 2mm circle you need to remove for an X rather than a 3mm on the AGBR, but for the same reason, the 10's are a lot tougher.

Thanks Guys for the comments. I'm looking forward to our next outdoor match.

Great shooting! Would love to see a guy like you shoot that gun down here in SoCal, but sadly, the only airgunners using the AGBR target will not allow .22 cal on the 25yd line! Curiously, they SCORE with the .22 plug, but use .177 caliber guns! They USED to allow us to shoot .22 cal, but when it looked as though the woman that normally wins all the matches was gonna get knocked off the podium by the .22's, a quick policy change was made, relegating the .22's to fifty yd matches only.

Kinda sad really ... i was thinking to go down to San Diego and shoot with em now that I seem to have my gun sorted better, but if its not open competition, why bother?

We've been shooting fifty yds at my place, but now I'm thinking to somehow set up for the International distances of 25 and 50 meters, just for fun. For now we would prolly still use our current A36 targets, and just shoot at the central bull for points. A few of us have been thinking to set up for the International game, with respect to weight and power limits for the open class, though I'm not 100% on these, I heard its 20 pounds all up weight and 20fpe ... anybody confirm this?

LD,

20 fpe and 15 pounds.

4. Heavy Varmint Air Rifle Class B - is any rifle having manually and mechanically (including
electronic triggers)? operated firing mechanism, a weight restriction of 15 lbs is set (including
attachments – scopes, muzzle devices, etc). Any air regulator can be used as long as it is integral
within the air cylinder. Any modification may be made to the rifle and any magnification scope may
be used. Factory stock or stocks that meet ‘Stock Clarification’ rules may be used (see APPENDIX
G). Return to battery shall NOT be permitted. Muzzle brakes, muzzle flips, barrel weights or
Harmonic Tuners are permitted. There is no restriction on cylinder size or capacity as long as 27.12
Joules or 20 ft lbs maximum power is retained and it is integral within the rifle. (Separate Air
Cylinders are not allowed, the cylinder must be part of the rifle and the overall weight). Shooting
Distance 25m. (0.177 and 0.2 scores plugged by 0.22 calibre gauge).

My USFT Hunter weighs 32 pounds with the stainless steel fore end and scope. Will shoot fine in our open/unlimited class but a little overweight for the international rules.

Thanks for the clarfication on the gun weight. Mine weighs a lot too, being fitted with a solid stailess forend that weighs more than the gun and scope seperate. But I am putting one together for Tony I. right now, and with the standard Mac1 kit it comes in at about 13.5lbs with 8-32 B&L scope. This is the "Upright Hunter type", but fitted with the new heavy stainless barrel, which netted out to a little over 28" long once finished up. The forend fitted is aliminum channel, and works, but is really lightweight. I'll be ftting up a little heavier one, but still aluminum. I can work with the 15 pounds all up ok, now that I know thats the spec.

Did something change after the Sept 13th 25yd match down here in SD? I thought you shot your .22? Did they change up the rules as a result of that match??

Yes, apparently they did change the rules. Its now ok to shoot alongside the .177's at 25yds ... so long as its not the BR50 game, which for some strange reason they still insist must be fired at 50yds if you use a .22 cal airgun, while the .177's can still shoot from 25yds, or even 15yds if its a sub-700fps match type rifle.

Whatever ... I learned they don't like .22s there for BR50, so I won't go.

I look forward to meeeting many of you guys next year at the World Champs in Summerville SC, benchrest Air Rifle has certainly come a long way. It's still in it's infancy down under but we will still try and field a good team to come and play.
