D.A. Question

Thanks to all the excellent post regarding D.A. and Tuners I have after 50 years of shooting got to the point I have a reasonable understanding regarding the tuning of my barrels.

I have been using the D.A. meter and tracking the altitude reading. I tune by changing the powder charge volume. (Clicks on the measure.) I keep good records and have been able to predict the tune point for my 6 PPC most days at the range. (I am in SE FL the altitude runs from 500 to 2,000 most days this time of the year at our range.)

My question is: How does an incoming wind affect the barrel tune?

Sunday we had an wind blowing from 12 O'Clock @ about 15 mph with gust to 20+. To me this would seem to add some to the air mass at the barrel end? Does this matter?

On the other side of the question how does a wind from 6 O'Clock affect the barrel tune?

quite a lot...

The wind from 3:00 to 9:00 seems to affect my groups more!!!hahaha......Roger

Just a note on your clicks. As the temperature of the day varies so does the weight of powder that the measure will drop at any given setting. The warmer the day the more the powder expands and the lighter charge the measure will drop. You could esily be dropping 0.2 - 0.3 grains more or less powder than you think you are and the same setting will not always keep dropping the same weight.

Regarding head and tail winds effecting tune, I'd say any wind will effect the bullet a lot more after it leaves the barrel than before it leaves the barrel. Head and tail winds will move the bullet in a vertical fashion so may create vertical in the groups. In this instance it would logically be the result of the bullets flight and not the rifle tune.
