custom reamer size?

For custom chamber reamers made from your brass roughly how much larger than the brass are reamers made?

Are you talking about sized brass or new out of the box brass? The reason that I ask is that I have been to this party multiple times, and IMO what you need to consider is sized brass that is old well used and work hardened. If you size a new case, it will be reduced in size more than a well used one that has become work hardened, by starting with a few well used cases, buying your FL die, sizing them, an then ordering your reamer to fit (with some clearance) those sized cases, you will end up in the best, and least expensive situation, getting a custom fit, for the cost of a factory die. If you are not planning a tight neck chamber, a bushing die would probably be your best bet. For a tight neck chamber, you can use a one piece die, but figuring out the chamber neck diameter to coordinate with your die is a little more complicated.

222 rem

What cartridge are you planning to do?

Im going to do a 222 rem based on lapua brass. Im going to have PTG spec the reamer based on my new lapua brass. Only thing im going to spec is the neck, but i did want to do a quick measure of my brass against the 222 reamer prints i have and see how close they are. I do miss having access to an optical comparitor.
What im planning on is a 28" 9tw 222 barrel, .0015 neck clearance

What do you plan on doing for dies?

It depends on how the chamber ends up being specd out as to how the dies will fit. I wasnt going to do a custom sizer right now. I have forster ultra die set with the fl die all honed out and a wilson SS seater and a redding instant indicator so ill figure it out after i find out the size of my chamber reamer. I already have the brass also. The barrel is going to be for next year.

Well in that case, I'd buy some Lapua brass first and measure the neck thickness variances of a dozen or so cases. Then take the thinnest one and calculate how much you'd have to turn the neck to get it to be consistent all the way around. Then add in your .0015" clearance (x2 for both sides) preference and order that size neck on the middle or largest size 222 reamer they offer if they don't specifically have one set up for Lapua brass.
