custom dies

If i supply cases that have been fired 3 or 4 times from a full length 22ppc who can make the dies to suit the cases.

David,

You may already have this aspect under control but just in case you do not.

Give some thought to the next barrel or two that you get when that 22PPC is toast. No point in getting a nice custom die that will work great with that barrel if you can't duplicate the chamber dimensions in the next barrel.

What I am getting at is, assuming you don't already, it might be a good idea to get your own reamer and have a die made to suit that reamer or at least get onto a gunsmith that can cut your chambers all the same so that your custom die works for other barrels as well.

Harrel's doesn't make custom dies. They produce one die for a 6ppc and one die for a couple of other calibers. They do not make a die to match your cases as has been widely reported. They will measure your brass to determine what caliber die to send you. They are great people, but do not do what you are asking for. It seems to be one of the great benchrest myths.

Lynwood Harrell makes his dies using a turning center, the internal shapes are cut with a boring bar that is computer controlled. He probably has around a dozen variations of The PPC (and that many more for the BR) sitting on the shelf ready to go. He measures your fired brass and sends you which ever variation is the best match for your chamber with the understanding that if you want one that is slightly larger or smaller you can return it and he will swap for what you want. It seems to me that that is a long way from one PPC or BR die. There are other good die makers. Lynwood's are popular because of their quality and his excellent customer service. We are lucky to have so many options.

David ...

Try Redding. Call and ask for Jay in Technical @ 607-753-3331. Their reference chart lists the 22 PPC as a Die Caliber they carry. I'm interested in the 220 Russian, and they list dies for that caliber also. Anyway, here is info from their site [ http://www.redding-reloading.com/ ] catalog that should interest you. Art

Redding Custom Made Dies

Our Series “C” and Series “D” listings contain many obsolete and wildcat calibers normally considered “custom” by other manufacturers. We try to maintain limited quantities of factory inventory on these. If you do not find the dies that you need after consulting the die caliber reference charts , we can usually custom make them for you.

*** Please keep in mind, the die reference chart is only a partial listing. We have made custom dies for hundreds of chamberings that are simply too numerous to list. ***

Some cartridges with a very unique design and/or unusual shoulder angle may require a tooling and engineering charge to partially cover our expense for making up special tooling. In the event such costs are required, they will be quoted separately. To get a firm price quote, send us your chamber reamer drawing, including all dimensions and the shoulder angle.

As an alternative, you can simply send us three (3) fired cases from your chamber for examination on our optical comparator. Package them carefully to prevent damage in transit, and do not forget to include clear instructions as to exactly what your needs are, i.e. dies to form the case, full length die set, neck sizing dies only, etc. Your fired cases will be returned upon request. Because of the nature of work involved in making custom dies, advance payment is required with the order. No COD’s please. Delivery usually takes from 12 to 14 weeks after your order has been received.

Boyd-
I talked to Lynnwood a couple of weeks ago and that is not what he told me. I just passed along the info I got from him as I understood it. I could have gotten it wrong but I was pretty persistent. Perhaps what I got wrong was that he only has three calibers and mine was not one of them. He definitely doesn't make customs to order but what you said would fit into what I heard from him with a little misunderstanding on my part. Thanks for straightening me out.

I didn't know he did three, what does he do besides BR and PPC ?

Last time I talked to them they were inches away from doing the 6.5X47Lapua case, just waiting for the interest to be there.............that MAY be the third one if they got enough call. Otherwise they do only the PPC and BR variants.

Harrels does sort of a semi custom die at a price way less than 1/2 what a Neal Jones die costs. By every account I have heard Neal's dies are excellent but I personally believe for the average person Harrels die is a far more cost effective route and the beauty of the way Harrel's does it is that if you desire a die that sizes your case more (or less) just call them up and they drop you the next size smaller (larger) in the mail. In addition they sell their dies for different variants of the basic case for a 30BR they open the neck up bigger than for a 6BR. Unless a person has their own reamer I really think the Harrels die is the more sensible approach and I do all my chambers with the same reamer and still find the Harrel's entirely satisfactory.

That would be interesting also, I have a couple of 30x47 lapuas I would imagine they will be expecting to not just use a new die for 6.5 but also 6 and 30

Good recommendation....

I used Redding for my custom "S type" full length 30HBR resize die. Excellent work and quick delivery including the fact that it required a tooling charge.

30-47 cases to use to make me a die this winter and they sent them back saying that they were too big for what they had to work with. Guess they must have had a change of heart or, perhaps others besides me asked for them after thay had sent mine back. Had I realized Redding has such reasonable prices and would do custom stuff I would have sent the cases to them! I bought a Small base 308 die instead; works about as well but adds an additional step to the process.

One can just

buy Reding 6.5X47 dies and ream the neck out to accomodate the 30 neck. This is the easiest thing to do and most cost effective I think.
