curious question

I have a 47 lb 1000 yard gun built on a bat action and a 9 twist krieger barrel.
The parent case was a 300 Remington ultra mag that has had a small amount of modification.
If I put a chronograph 10 feet in front of the muzzle, how fast do you suppose I could get a 110 grain Berger going? I would slowly work up to the normal 100 grain load of powder of course.

3999- no guts -no glory

if ya really want to get somewhere i have some .30 cal sabots that take a 40 gr .22 bullet and should melt right into the lands at about 4850 or so. the sabots can be a little hard on the chrono if you dont plan ahead.

At 10 ft., I'd be concerned about reading muzzle blast.

Easily over 4K. I've got a 30-06 improved that exceeds 3500 easily with 125gr bullets, burning around 62 grains of powder. This is with a 24 inch barrel as well. The UM case has just a touch more capacity!!!

Dave, I just noticed that your barrel is a 9 twist, that may cause some issues in keeping the bullets from blowing up at the higher velocities...

I'll go out on a limb and say 5,000 fps is possible. However, I think the bullet would vaporize about 10' out of the muzzle. Probably have to do it with solid turned bullets. Might ask Berger what they think the max rotational speed thier bullet would stand.

There is a Gunsmith in Vinton VA who specializes in a 300wsm varmint rig.

Richard Franklin uses a slower twist barrel and runs lighter bullets at over 4100 fs with a 300 wsm. He has several videos out that show ground hog hits where the ground hog goes flying into the air several feet. He is an advertiser here on this site. Look under the Gunsmith listings. Maybe he will join in the post.

At ten feet, I'd say your chronograph will attain about 75 fps. Haven't a clue about the bullet. You might want to try a Barnes or other solid copper type bullet so it doesn't blow apart. Good luck and report back.
