Crushing new brass when sizing?

Hey guys-

I finally got my Forester FL die and I am now trying to size my 6.5X47 brass down to 6X47. The problem is that if I leave the decaping rod with expander ball, more times than not it will crush my cases.

Anyone know what's wrong?

Are you saying that it works fine when you don't have the rod installed? Any chance you have the expander ball set incorrectly?

I can't see why it would be an issue if it was a tad long, other than doming your primer pocket, but if it was set too short maybe it could get in the way of the sizing.

Yeah it works fine without the expander/decapping rod in the die.

The expander button was at the top of the rod so I adjusted in down and it still crushes.

It's probably something simple, but I'm outta ideas..........

A 6mm expander ought to go through a 6.5mm case neck without touching anything. Is there something above the decapping rod that is hitting the case mouth when the case is all the way into the die? I assume you're removing the whole decapping rod from the die to use it without the expander. Looking at a Forster die (non-bushing) I can't see how it could be happening.

Larry-
I don't get it either. I finally gave up and removed the decapping rod and resized all my cases without the rod all together, but now I thought I would try and go back using the expander ball to make sure the case mouths were uniformed and sure enough, it crushes about every other one or more.

I wonder if the expander ball is just the wrong size.......maybe??

Does the expander slip through a 6.5 case neck without touching? A 6 mm expander should be about 0.241" although I haven't measured one that I remember.

Aside from case shoulders that could be way too soft, I can't understand how the expander could crush the cases in necking down. One solution is a bushing neck die without an expander. If you're using Lapua brass you should be able to do that without neck turning or turning too much.

This is really bizarre IMHO.

It sounds to me like the expander is still so high that it is in the neck when the brass is sized down. If it is down inside the case before the case neck enters the neck of the die, there cannot be any interference or influence.
Redding sends a smaller expander button with their bushing dies, used only to hold the de-capping pin into the end of the split rod. Measure the dia. of the expander if in doubt.

It's fixed......it was just out of adjustment like many of you stated.

Thanks to all!!
