Cost of Lapua v Remchester brass in Oz

Hi all

I read the ADI powder cf Hodgdon powder post in Centrefire Benchrest and felt compelled to post another of my experiences with the cost of components in Australia vs the USA.

Recently I decided I needed a new overbore 22 calibre centrefire rifle to replace the last one I had.

I didn't want to fireform 22-250 Ackley brass, opting instead for a 22-243, figuring I could save on headspace gauges as well.

When I went to buy brass the Lapua was $96/100 v $101.80 for Remington.

I ordered the reamer from PTG and I don't think Dave Kiff believed me, but here's the price list:

http://www.riflesa.asn.au/price_lists/brass.htm

As you can see, had I gone the 22-250, the Lapua would still be cheaper than the Remington.

I bought some cheap ammo for my 308 Win hunting rifle recently - know what I bought?

Norma - it was cheaper.

Ben

It must be because Oz is closer to Finland and Sweden! Likely due to, uh, stupid US export regulations that jack up the prices on firearms related items. Can't trust our friends, but we're apparently willing to ship all sorts of military goodies to the Middle East that'll end up killing our troops overseas. Don't make no sense whatsoever!

Missing something

Ok that equates to $5.80 per hundred. May be I am missing something here but is that amount even worth quibbling about.
Andy.

Hi Andy

Sinclair currently has Remington 243 brass for $43.49, Lapua on sale for $93.99 (reg $99.99).

I guess the point I was trying to make was that in Australia I'm paying $96 for Lapua (not a bad price anywhere in the world) cf $101.80 for Remington, or $5.80 less vs $50 more in the US.

That aside, with the distinct possibility of losing cases hunting I'd rather lose cheap Lapua brass than the expensive Remington ones, not to mention the distinct possibility of there being a difference in quality.

A couple of years ago I bought a Howa 243 and had it rechambered in 6 AI as a cheap fireforming alternative to a dedicated barrel and I use it to make cases for a varmint rifle and a light gun.

I thought about buying a Howa 22-250 to rechamber in 22-243 AI to do the same thing, but them just decided to skip the fireforming and go with the original shoulder angle - just run the cheap Lapua cases through my FL die.

Maybe I'm getting old but I couldn't be bothered fireforming brass I might lose and I have 308 Winchester headspace gauges (although the go gauge is a 22-243 no go gauge so admittedly I'd only need the 22-243 go gauge).

Ben

PS The Australian wholesaler for Lapua deals directly with the public and is currently out of 243 brass, although it's probably about $80/100 + postage.

Cheap, eh? Their prices are so low I've even considered chambering a rifle for factory Lapua ammo. Older = lazier or smarter?
