Considering a muzzle brake? MUST READ

i just got off the phone with lynwood harrel of harrels precision. i was in the market for a muzzle brake for a 7WSM build. after speaking to mr. harrel and finding out how he does business, i ordered three instead of one! mr. harrel is one of the nicest guys around. when the order was placed, i asked if i should pay with CC. he said not to worry about it that an invoice would be in with the brakes. he said to look them over and make sure they are to my satisfaction and then pay. i asked about the cost of shipping and he said not to worry about that either!!!!!! this kind of trust is unheard of in todays society. mr. harrel, it is MUCH APPRECIATED. why pay more for another brake that does exactly the same thing???????

Mr. Williams:

Yes, Linwood Harrell is a nice guy, and makes good products. But we have a rule on the Benchrest Central forums that you don't trash a product, and by extension, you don't praise a product beyond need.

Several of the gunsmiths that answer your questions on the Gunsmith Forum in fact make muzzle brakes. To assert that part of their services aren't needed because somebody else has the perfect solution, and cheaper, does them a disservice.

I know it is a fine line, walking between deserved praise and what amounts to a blatant advertisement. But please try to walk it.

Thanks.

Charles Ellertson (who, by the way, does not offer gunsmithing services)

I agree! I've bought tuners for rimfire BR guns from them. Harrell makes and excellent product, and the service is excellent. Couldn't seal with nicer folks.

Shocked me to,

The first time I ordered a reamer from Dave Kiff, PTG, and he said that I'd get an invoice later, I was shocked.
A number of the benchrest, precision shooter vendors do this. That says a lot for the folks that do business with them, also.

you have got to be kidding me!!!!!

charles e.,

are you serious???? if so, i will certainly try not to say anything nice about you for fear of offending the other moderators on this site. i know there is someone here who has the market cornered on site moderation and i would hate to hurt their business by praising you. i gave praise where i felt it was due, nothing more. lighten up!

Don't worry, chuck. People get selective vision sometimes.

I notice there's no complaint on this statement made elsewhere, even though it is obviously not factual:

They will last 5 of your lifetimes and still not need service.

Looked to me like you were talking about Mr.Harrell and not his product must not have read what you wrote.

Chuck, I agree

Mr. Harrell is definitely a very trusting and unique individual. I've done business with him in the past and will continue to do so in the future. Top shelf all the way.

Dito..

I called Mr. Harrell and he sent me a brake with an invoice inclosed. Could not have been nicer or provide any prompter service. He is a southern gentleman.

I don't know who Mr. Harrell is, however Linwood is a pain!

He sends you product with invoice, and eventually you pay him, AND then he takes MONTHS to deposit your check.

I have COMPLAINED TO HIM REPEATEDLY, but it never changes.

I once threatened to NOT pay, and Linwood said, "OK".

And WAlter is just as bad!

The nerve of some people. We'll just have to continue sending them work as they'll have no day off, that'll teach em ;)

Harrell's.........

Precison brakes work also, I ordered three myself, I just finished one on my 270 WSM and it works better than a brake I had fabricated/installed on another gun by a local smith. I too nearly fell over after talking to Lynwood, he has a very unique way of doing business. He has my business for muzzle brakes.

all brakes are not the same

why pay more for another brake that does exactly the same thing???????

Glad you're so happy with the service you received, but there are differences in brakes. In terms of noice, recoil reduction, and price -- due to the different designs.

So, although the intent of a brake is to reduce recoil, they all do NOT do exactly the same thing. Anymore than all turret presses work the same. Mine happens to be a Harrell's Precision unit (two 'R's, two 'L's in Harrell),but I digress... :)

bill,

i am sure you are right about all brakes not being equal. i honestly dont have much experience with brakes. when i made the above statement, i was just referring to mr. harrells website where he states that they tested numerous brake designs over the years and could not tell much difference. from what i can see of mr. harrells character, i would tend to believe him.

After a couple months I called to make sure my check made it to them OK and wasn't lost in the mail. Lynwood said not to worry that he never worries about money and he felt confident my check got there OK. About a month later it was finally deposited. Lynwood and Walter are great to deal with and make some fine products to boot.
