Considering 300WM

Well all the components except for the scope are in country (Oz) to build my new 6ppc for me to get back into BR shooting. At last.

Now that 1000yd BR shooting is available in my state I am considering this option as well. Probably the unlimited class which unless I am mistaken is restricted to a 50lb rig. That will allow a substantial amount of barrel to be fitted. What maximum diameters are available these days. Don't seem to see many profiles from the manfacturers greater than 1.25" A 26" barrel of this diameter would not equate to a 50lb'er.

Andy, there are three bodies that sanction1,000 yard benchrest in the States. None of them have a 50-pound weigh limit for Unlimited. There is no weigh limit. Typical is between 50 pounds (light side) to 100 pounds (heavy side), though I have known of some 180-pound rifles.

You need to find out what rules you'll be shooting under in Australia. At least some of the clubs there shoot under IBS rules, where again, there is no weight limit.

Hi andy, There is no weight limit in any of the 3 long range events in Australia (500Met/550 yd and 1000yd.. I just recieved a 1.500 OD 30 inch long barrel made by Maddco in OZ and all the US made barrels are available in those sizes.. I shoot a modified 300wm and it does OK at all distances..JR..Jeff Rogers

Thanks Charles E

To my way of thinking if you were to build a 100lb 1000yd BR rifle it would be more beneficial to keep the weight of the stock to a reasonable level and put as much weight into the barrel. Obviously if the largest OD blanks are about two and a half inches what would be gained by making a stock so heavy. Apart from the fact it would sit there like the rock of Gibraltar.
Curious,
Andy.

Andy,

I think Francis is in some ways right, and in some wrong. As long as you are thinking of a conventionally stocked rifle, I think he's right. But the long range rules are different. So, you could think in terms of a short-range unlimited rifle, except (1) the rifle must run in sandbags rather than steel and delrin, and the front and rear rests must not be conjoined when the rifle is fired (i.e., they can be joined by a plate for set up, which is removed when shot. They can both be mechanical rests for HG.).

Look at it this way: a rifle is a system, and no part of it can be ignored. But if the rules allow, some parts can be eliminated -- it just becomes a different system.

As a thought: if you are thinking of an unconventional setup, the general forum is just as good -- perhaps better -- than the long range forum. Better in that you can gain the thinking of some of the experienced short-range shooters like Francis, who may not visit the long-range forum.

Andy,

For instance, here is a link to the gunsmith Joel Pendergraft's 1K heavy gun, that set a world record (since supplanted. Still the IBS record)

http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com...ets-new-ibs-1000-yard-heavy-gun-world-record/

Mine is similar, except more of a bull-pup. The "butt stock" ends about 2 inches behind the action, and extends forward so it is actually under the tube that contains the barrel.

The Australian shooter, Jeff Rogers, who replied to this thread, holds a fair number of records, and also shoots a tension-tubed rifle. If it is not too far for you to travel, I'd go to a couple of matches and see how people have thought through and handled the freedom allowed by the rules. There are ways to make improvements with thinking disallowed by many point-blank BR rules.

Different world

These types of firearms completly redefine my thoughts on the meaning of the term rifle. They obviously have great potential but I don't think I would be inclined to build one for use in the unlimited class in 1000yd bench rest. Thanks for the link.
Andy.
