components for rifle build

A friend is trying to talk me into building a hunter benchrest gun (quite successfully I might add:)). We're looking at ordering a Stiller Rattler action, and going from there. Barrel will be a 30 cal Rock, jewel trigger...stock is not decided on yet.

My question to all of you is this, given a primary use of HBR, I'd like to fit up another barrel for a 6X47 or something similar for a 600 yard gun, either in competition or just for playing with at longer yardages. What components would you choose as far as action and stock that would be useful for more than just HBR?

I don't know all the rules for the different disciplines as of yet and would like a few opinions and options on component options given the above criteria. I'd like to stick with one stock and obviously the action, with the option of fitting a different barrel/scope useable for other competitions either varmint or 600 yard stuff.

Any ideas???? This is something I'd like to put together this year sometime and have it ready for next spring.

I do have a 6mmBR reamer with .270 neck along with a throating reamer if that makes a difference.

Why not...

Why not just screw the 6X47 barrel on your existing Hunter rifle you're building. I use my 30HBR Hunter rifle for coyote hunting all the time. Works great and all I have to do is put a more powerful scope on it.

That's what I'm asking....basically I'm shopping around for components for the Hunter BR rifle, but I really don't know what people are using for that class. Is the Rattler' a good action to go with? Would you choose something else?

Any suggestions would be welcome as far as stock options and such.

The 30x47 is probably the most common new cartridge, a 6.5x47 Lapua necked up to 30 cal. There are several other like 30x44 30x47, most made off the Savage or 308 case. For long range you can use anything that uses the 308 size bolt face. Have fun with the HBR, I started 2 years ago.

Yes...

Yes...the "Rattler" action is as good as they come. It is a close relative of the Stolle action which has been around for decades. I use a Stolle action (made by Kelbley), a Shilen barrel, Jewell trigger, and a MacMillen stock. My caliber is a 30HBR (a 30x47 with a sharper angle neck). The most popular calibers are the 30x47 and 30x44. I use Remington Savage 300 brass to form my brass. I've tried Lapua 6.5x47 brass, but found it to large at the web for my chamber, so I gave up on that. The Remington Savage 300 brass works fine for me and lasts a long time. 308 brass will work as well, but involves more work since I have to shove the neck back more.

good luck,

Thanks guys, that's the kind of info I was looking for.

Guess I'll have to get that Rattler on order when I scrape up the cash.

Since...

Since you're from WI, you'll have a ball shooting with some of the best Hunter competitors around. They are great guys and you'll have a great time if you compete in the WI State Hunter match.

Good luck and good shoot'n...virg
