ok, its time to build a "bolt action" benchrest, help me complete my list. so far all i have on it is a leupold 35 x scope for 400.00 i am also looking at 2 advertisers off this site for a custom action. 1 is stillers and the other is time precisions--he supplies spacers which makes sinse if my ammo is different rim thickness. i also have a lead on a bull barrel stock 40x but then how many more hundreds of $ will be needed for it?? new barrel?? trigger work?? shoot it first before i buy it??

bill

Buy then try????

Bill:
If you buy an action, then you buy a barrel, ands then you have someone fit the barrel to your action, there is no way you can try it before you buy it. There are several ad's in the classified that sell complete gunx & may let you do that, but not one Action maker that I know of will do it your way.

have you looked into the Hall action or the Turbo?
The 40x is a very good plateform to build off of.
New Barrel, possibly Lilja's Tight Bore or the new Rachet Shilen. A Jewel trigger and a Stith Stock.

i have looked at all actions, should of mentioned , i am left handed , because of a vision issue with right eye, so i would prefer left bolt, is there a such thing as a 40 x left hand bolt??

bill

no left bolt 40x that i know of, but i do believe the Turbo or maybe the Hall can flip the bolt and/or can let you feed from the left and bolt on right.

No left bolt Hall. Allen and I had that discussion last weekend. From the bench, a left bolt is not required and a right port is prefered for left handed shooters.

i shoot left handed off the bench i feel it gives me an advantage over
the right handed guys sometimes, i pull the trigger with my left hand
work the bolt and feed the ammo with the right on a right handed gun
plus i can see everything going on in the action. a right handed person
would get the same thing from a left bolt left port. you just need to get
used to working the bolt and feeding with the right, that's the way i grew
up so it never bothered me. since most guns are built this way it really
increases your options of finding one that is already built like these guys say.
what would be really ideal for me would be a right handed gun dual port
i could load from the right and it would eject to the left so empties
wouldn't be in the way.

I'm left handed, a right bolt is not an issue in benchrest, but a right port is for me, that's why I like 40X. I shot right hand rifles all my life, so I'm used to it. A buddy has a left-bolt right port Turbo he let me shoot the other day. I wasn't comfortable with the left bolt, because of lack of experience with it. One other thing about a righty rifle, makes it a whole lot easier to sell. Thanks, Douglas

dont be afraid of any of the complete guns listed here. each and everyone here is honest and a gentleman. if you make a deal they will give you a short time to either like it or reject it. some of these men are champion shooters that are constantly moving up in quality for their next year of competing. those rifles will meet your expections.

if you dont like it they will cheerfully refund your money upon return. then there are some quality dealers here that sell used guns. im just not afraid of any of them.

so get busy and buy one im glad you have decided a 1022 wont fill your need off a bench and great shooting to you. then the next thing is the pursuit of ammo another expense becaue walmart ammo wont work dont ask me how i know.

Due to complaints I have removed the caustic remarks... you have 9 posts in total, all contributing nothing. Did you join just to be offensive?

i have no real issue with using a right bolt i do lots of things with both hands , just thought if i did a custom rifle why not is all, i have not had the ability to use a left bolt rifle at all..

I had a little discussion about a bolt action rifle w/ Bill yesterday after our monthly RF BR match, and suggested that he keep his eye out for a lefty Anschutz rig or match rifle to base a sarter BR rig on. Am I not correct that Anschutz makes lefty match rifles? Seems this might be a fairly easy route to a capable rifle to get started. Then a good set of at least 4 windflags. Bill already has a good rest setup.
BTW, he hasn't put it on here yet, but he added another point in the match yesterday, shooting a nice 247-12X's in some dicey wind conditions. That was good for 2nd place overall at 50 yds (7 shooters). There was only one clean score shot. Bill beat the four guys with custom rigs handily. He is trying very hard to learn & do things in a disciplined manner. I think we will see him become an excellent rimfire shooter if he continues to work at it like he has been doing. Can't wait to see him get a real BR rig.

thats my opinion. as for cravenhead or whatever you are ive probably got more rifles good and bad than you have. i do not propose mysefl as anything. i have several offers for my calfee and it s not for sale i got a good deal on it and intend to enjoy it even though i now have to spend 200.00 for a good trigger that should have been on this rifle in the first place you can bet this rifle cost more than the 1800.00 i paid for it. as well as my 1200.00 gene davis 40x, my suhl with a stith stock and a fantastic bedding job on it.

i do know the difference between squandering my money and i buy used so i can get my money out if need be. now i dont think bill said he was going to try to shoot with the big boys did he? he has decided on a b/r gun i hope to think i encouraged him in the right direction. maybe he will be your competitor some day if you are who you claim to be but your rotten attitude may just run him out of b/r all together.

so in his case he needs a good b/r rifle to start and he can move up if he wants. i dont know how many starting musicians who started out with the very best horns money can buy and after a few months where do they set. in a closet somewhere.

its called being smart and frugal

its looks like from several conversations , my best bet would be to let a 22 rimfire builder put my components together, by threading the barrel and so on, is there a list somewhere of 22 rimfire builders??

Lefty Anschutz m54

A buddy of mine has a lefty M54 in a McMillan BR stock for sale if you are looking for one. I will be glad to PM you the contact info if you are interested.

i have a leed on a scope already and now i have a leed on a stock, so does anyone have a remington 40 x action they would be willing to sell, even if action still needs a once over from a gunsmith. i am leaning toward a 40x package espically with the scope offer and stock offer i have already. my original posts on a custom action is on the back burner now.

man you are almost there. i thnik a call is in order to brian voelker for you. he will steer you the right direction and help you.

i dont have his nr. but im sure someone else here has it and will agree with me.

if you have a stock does it need a bedding job dont think you can get by without one it wont work.

god luck

Nipper,
Seriously, have you considered buying a rifle out of the classifieds?
If you are going to have one built you really should find a gunsmith before you buy a bunch of parts. Your smith is going to have preferences on the materials he/she is going to use.

It will cost you as much in labor and parts to build a new gun as to buy just about any on the classifieds. There are also several good guns on there right now.

Do as you choose, It is a lot of fun having a gun built. Depending on the smith it also may take several months to get your gun.

Like I said... Find a GUNSMITH FIRST.

You might try Bill Myers. He has built some very competitive guns.
He might even have one for sale.
