Maybe it is a good idea to stash a few in other places besides your own home. What can I say but these bunch are nothing but crooks.

Twenty minutes before the gun-grab meeting was to begin in the gymnasium of Highwood High in High River, Alta on Thursday evening, the 160 chairs organizers had set out were already filled with residents eager to vent their frustration at the RCMP’s widespread property destruction and gun confiscation following June’s devastating flood.

By the time the meeting began, nearly 350 High Riverites were crowded inside. They were angry and rightly so.

It was revealed this week that Mounties battered down more than 1,900 doors in the days following the overflow of the Highwood River. A conservative estimate places the damage caused by door-kicking Mounties at over $3 million, above and beyond the cost of flood damage.

Mounties also seized hundreds of firearms that they claimed were “in plain sight,” but which we have since learned were often in locked rooms or cases. In one home, Mounties had to search three times before they found two old, unloaded guns hidden behind boxes in the furnace room in the basement.

So much for “plain sight.”

As public anger over this gun grab has persisted, Mountie excuse-making has become ever more unbelievable.

For instance, participants at Thursday’s town hall, hosted by Danielle Smith, the leader of Alberta’s opposition and the MLA for the High River area, were given a letter from the RCMP’s Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan, commander of all Mounties in Alberta.

In his letter, McGowan claimed his officers smashed down nearly 2,000 doors in the name of “protecting private property.” As one resident at the microphone wryly observed, “how is it protecting private property to destroy the doors to 1,900 homes?”

Even more incredible is the Mounties’ insistence that guns had to be removed from homes before it was safe to let residents to return to their homes because looters and vandals might take the guns.

But that makes no sense whatever. In their zeal to confiscate civilian firearms, Mounties left 1,900 homes (out of about 7,000) wide open to thieves, since it was simply impossible for them to watch over all 1,900 door-less homes as residents poured back in.

Officers didn’t take credit cards, jewelry, cash, passports or other valuables -- just guns. So their door-busting rampage actually made homes much more vulnerable to robbery. (Thankfully there was no widespread theft.)

Mounties also maximized damage during their spree. Even at homes where it would have been possible to break a window to get at the lock, officers insisted on bashing in the door. This not only causes more damage, it takes more effort and time. It amounts to unreasonable search, something prohibited by the Charter. Not even an emergency justifies police treating private property with such contempt.

This wanton destruction also occurred in areas of town untouched by rising waters, so it couldn’t have been solely about locating trapped survivors, as police insist. Despite their continued denials, Mounties must have been targeting guns. Indeed, a National Firearms Association analysis of RCMP video of the search of one home shows officers saying they have “located all the firearms.” Again that is an indication they were deliberately looking for guns, not merely collecting those they casually found in the course of their search for survivors.

The Mounties’ actions have also made Canadians everywhere less safe. I have received more than 30 emails from people across the country insisting they will never obey a mandatory evacuation order from authorities because they no longer trust police to respect their property.

Such is the RCMP’s obsession with taking civilians’ guns that they have now discouraged many Canadians from leaving their homes in the face of wildfires, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, explosions and ice storms.

Absolutely disgusting! And I bet the RCMP did not treat the firearms gently. Hope the owners can get them back--but the RCMP probably has some loophole, where they will destroy them.

BTW, another heads up, for anybody going through Wash DC! Police can arrest you, $1000 fine, and criminal charges if they find even EMPTY BRASS in your vehicle, and you don't have a DC firearms permit. Some veteran got busted when he went to the VA, and some was in his backpack, alarmed on the metal detector at the door.

My 18yr-old nephew spent a night in jail in Massachusetts because a cop found an empty 22 casing during a routine traffic stop......

We've let this happen people..... THINK and vote please. WE LET THIS STUFF HAPPEN through pure ignorance and apathy. Generally the less conservative among us are "more informed" (not better informed but MORE informed) and are certainly more vocal as a whole than we country boys (although I DO notice that a bunch of the Wa'BAma apoloogists aren't bullying their opinions around BRC as much any more ;) )

mmmmmmmmmmm

I have asked for the statistics on how many criminals were arrested with 2 TV's in the back of a pickup or car during that week and to date no politician or beurocrat will answer the question for me

although more than a few have said be careful or they will visit my home to do a routine firearms inspection

how is that for justice for all

I have this strange feeling that things like this will continue, and likely get worse as things go on and the "authorities" decide that they have to protect us ever more from ourselves. Then of course there are the ever present "terrorists" that the police when they're searching for them feel free to order people from their homes (Boston Marathon anyone) search the homes without warrants, and confiscate firearms regardless of legality. I won't even go into SWAT raids at the slightest excuse with pets shot and people of all ages traumatized to ensure "officer safety".

It could get ugly, and the "authorities" don't want us armed.

Politician Recall

Not sure this made the national news, but here in Colorado two Democrat state senators were recalled and booted from office for their backing of gun control laws recently passed.

It won't change the world but those two may understand they were sent to represent their constituents, not to dictate their personal bias.

Here's a link...http://http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/politics/polls-open-for-colorados-first-ever-recall-elections-at-7-am

John Morse is particularly arrogant and probably won't 'get it'.
