what is the brand everybody likes the best? what is everybodies take on one piece carbon or stainless steel? i myself have a 40 inch tipton carbon rod and find it works great. what are others take on the cleaning rod game here? do you use a brush or just a jag and cotton wipe when you clean out your barrel? i use a jag and cotton wipe with hoppes#9 then a few dry patches then brush it one time removing the brush before i take the rod back out, then hoppes, then several more dry patches the the brush one more time. with my lilja barrel i have found out it cleans very easily.

Cleaning techniques vary. IMO the hard highly polished S/S rod is best.

A BR favoite topic.

This seems to be a favorite topic for BR shooters. I use one wet patch with Hoppe's #9 and two dry patches between relays, that removes everything but very small traces of carbon just in front of the case mouth. And oddly enough those traces are always at the top of the chamber. At the end of the day one wet patch and then about 15 to 20 short strokes in the chamber area with a wet nylon brush and it's clean. I get no lead fowling that I can see and yes I have a bore scope so I'm not guessing. I use a one piece Ivy rod with a built in jag, no joints to snag the crown. I use Eley almost exclusively and have not had any leading in any of my or my wife's guns. I do use some UM1 in one gun and it leads considerably. The nylon brush is not very effective on lead though, have to resort to 3 to 5 one way passes with a bronze brush.

My Opinion

I personally like Ivy Rods. :D:D:D:D
But, I guess you could say my opinion is a little bias..... ;)

Other than a good rod, I would highly recommend a good two piece rod guide.

i looked at your ivy rods. are they one piece? i have a great bore giude already so that is covered. i really like my carbon rod for my rifles, but i can have my arm twisted into buying another one:D!!! i can see where having a carbon and stainless steel cleaning rod would be nice!! what is the difference if any between a carbon fiber rod and a stainless steel rod? i mean the carbon rod cleans my barrel just as well as a stainless steel rod, so what is the difference? your patch pushes the fouling out one end, so does the brush. you remove the patch and the brush before bringing it back out of the barrel/action, so what is the real difference? i'm not that smart, but i just have to know guys. why one over the other? why just a one piece(i think i have a handle on this one, but somebody can give me thier ideals on it)?

Most of my rods are one piece. I have made a few two piece rods, but these are made so the joint is back near the handle so the joint NEVER enters the bore. Joints are a weak spot where the rod can flex, and rub the bore. Plus the edges can catch on most multi piece rods.

Used properly, almost any method will work. Some just better than others.

Carbon fiber can be abrasive.

A patch will push most of the fouling out, but you don't get it all out with one. A nicely polished stainless rod will clean easy, stay cleaner, and pick up virtually no abrasives from your bore.

Am I twisting hard enough yet???? :p

Here's an additional question. Why do you suppose that nobody has made any attempt to make a .22 version of the boresaver of T.K. Nolan which uses an insert to support ANY rod better than what we have available.

Ivy Rod

Ivy Rod with Pro Shot Spear Tip Jag that he turns down to perfectly match the rod diameter. Wet batch with two dry patches after every target. Every third target I use a a nylon brush on the chamber. I use a mixture of 1/3 ea. Shooters Choice, Shooters Choice Lead Remover and Kroil.

Neil Jones bore guide with insert to match the rod.

But I'm a class B shooter at best and haven't a clue what I'm doing just having fun

Personally I like Denny Phillips rods. Beautiful!!!

mr. nobody,

I will shed some light on the subject.

I have a Ivy rod made by Denny Phillips. If I had 2 words to describe the Ivy rods, it would be precision quality that shines like chrome. ;)

Carbon rods will let contaminents, debri, or foreign matter adhere to it. Even if the carbon has been dipped or layered with a smoother outside film coating, that film can eventually wear off. I woould rather stick a chrome like polished rod that is harder than the actual barrel steel, like the Ivy rod through a match precision barrel than any other and know that I am doing my best to keep the barrel to looking and performing like new for years to come without doing any damge to my barrel.

The Ivy rod is simply put the best rod that I have ever used. And Denny makes these rods straighter than any rod currently being offered on the market that I know of.

Bore Tech Eliminator has been the cats meow in my opinion to cleaning a rifle barrel. I used to use Butch's Bore Shine. And it was good. The Bore Tech Eliminator is a lot better. It cleans a barrel faster and better with less effort.

I mix Bore Tech Eliminator 50/50 with Kroil.

I guess they have changed the label.

But here's the Bore Tech Eliminator.

Brad, I like Bore Tech Rimfire Blend for my 22s. I order from Bore Tech but find the shipping and handling quite a factor.

Where do you buy yours?

Another vote for Ivy Rods!

Ivy rods are the best thing since sliced bread. I love mine.

Bill,

I buy mine in the big bottle locally here at Shooters Gun Shop in Cape Girardeau, MO.
