Cleaning Rods and Integral Jags

I was wondering what everyone's opinion is on rods that have a threaded female connector to place a jag and/or brush on the end versus those that are milled out to have just a jag.

From a damage perspective, is that gap between the jag/brush and rod really going to potentially scratch the barrel? I would think that if it's tightly snug then everything would be okay. Obviously if you went with an integral jag that's milled from the rod, you'd have to also buy a rod with a brush attachment. And in today's economy, I don't really relish throwing out another $50 for something that really doesn't make sense. Any opinions??

I attach my jag firmly with pliers and then Polished the joint. and the jag itself. I have three I have prepared this way for each of my guns. Rich

Its hard to get by with one rod, if you dont have your jag and brush on farmer tight, the brush for sure will unthread on the back stroke and that will ding the crown.

Ivy Rods

I go with the 1-P rod and rod & brush.
I use the Ivy Rod,SS. he cut the jag to me design.

:)

How do you all carry your rods? I used to carry mine in pvc holder. But it was one more thing to carry. I now keep them in the double gun case, 52 inches long, with one gun and cleaning rod per case. I also keep the bolt and bore guide in the case. Nothing like getting to the range and finding the bolt is at home. The bolt is in a silicon rag and the cleaning guide in another rag so they don't scratch against the gun. Must admit I have switched back and forth. Maybe 10 years ago I had a jag sticking over the edge of the case as I closed it and it bent. After much effort trying to straiten the jag I ended up just replacing it. Can't do that with a integral jag.

PVC Holder

I guess I'll call it a custom PVC holder so the rods get the protection they need. Here in Ohio you see a lot of Kelbly SS & the Ivy SS Rod.....so PVC holders are the way to go.
Some PVC inside of PVC. :)

Why don't you just go to your Ace Hardware Store and pick up a couple of pieces if 1/2" PVC pipe and three plastic pipe separators and two 1/2 PVC caps and make your own. Total cost is about $5.00. Just make the rod holders about 1" longer than your cleaning rods with the jag and brush on them..

Clarence Ivy made me two rods a few years ago. One with an integral jag and one threaded. I thought the integral jag was the way to go. You can get a very similar product to the original Clarence Ivy rods from Neal Jones, but I don't know how hard they are and they are slightly larger in diameter than Denny Phillips rods. Anyway, I later asked Denny Phillips to make a rod with an integral jag and judging by his reaction, I would say it was the first time he had been asked that. He made the rod and did a great job. I later bent it and had him replace it. I still thought the integral jag was the way to go. I later had a chance to buy a Myers rod from a local shooter and he started talking about the integral jag. He said that brass was there for a reason and if somehow you get that integral jag against the bore, you will ruin it where you may not if it's brass. I don't know; my guess is you would probably ruin it either way, but I've used a Denny Phillips rod with a brass jag ever since.

Integral jags

I have been making quite a few integral jags lately. Centerfire shooters really like them for the no false copper traces. No joint makes a difference too. Lately, it seems like everyone has there specific likes for jags. Seems like there is always something different to do.

You are right Beau, you are about the first to order one with a jag machined right on the rod. If it wasn't for customers asking for different stuff, we would all be driving the same thing....

The key to any cleaning, is using it properly.

I have one of Dennys in 20 cal with a integral jag and its the best rod I have I highly recommend them and Denny is a great guy and will make you what you need.
