Choosing Scope Magnification Setting

Have a general question reagarding Scope Magnification;

Lets say you are competing at a distance of 50 yds (relatively close distance)

and your variable scope can adjust up to or even beyond 36x, would you choose the maximum power to get the closest view or would you dial down to a around 20x or 18x or? ... Is there a general protocol or is it a personal preference to what each shooter likes to see at "X" distance?

Just thinking out loud here and planning some trial tests for next range visit.

If your scope is adjustable, then try different settings until you find the one you are comfortable with.
