"Cheney Acknowledges He Lied About China Drilling ‘60 Miles Off The Coast Of Florida

Cheney's office said in a statement to The Associated Press that the vice president had erred.

On Wednesday, Vice President Dick Cheney gave a speech to the Chamber of Commerce in which he claimed that China, in cooperation with the Cuban government, is drilling for oil “60 miles off the coast of Florida.” “Even the communists have figured out” that drilling for oil is the solution to the energy crisis, Cheney argued.

Cheney was quoting conservative columnist Geroge Will, who wrote on June 6 that China is drilling “60 miles off Florida,” “closer to South Florida than U.S. companies are.” The same day Cheney spoke, Rep. Roy Blunt (R-MO) wrote that Castro was allowing drilling “45 miles from the Florida keys.” Rep. George Radanovich (R-CA) and House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) have also raised the specter of Chinese drilling just off U.S. shores.

The problem, of course, is that the claim is completely false. After his claim was thoroughly debunked in the press, Cheney acknowledged that he had, in fact, lied in his speech, though his statement today offered no apology and issued only a half-hearted backtrack of his original claim:

It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there.

Cheney’s comments were so egregiously false that a member of his own party took to the Senate floor to correct the record. Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) decried claims of “some fabricated Cuba/China connection,” saying they have “no merit.”

Peddling stories of false connections that have no merit is hardly a new practice for Cheney. But being called out by his own party — and having to admit error — is certainly an uncommon occurence for him."

Tell Me Something I Don't Already Know!

When they write the history of the Bush administration, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rove will be labeled as some of the worst rogues to ever guide White House policy.

Don,

Big deal!!! Bill Clinton lied UNDER OATH and you guys still love him!! No democrat except Liberman had the guts to say anything, and he had to leave the party to get elected. As an American there is enough dirty laundry to go around.....check your britches!!
Have a nice day!!

Oh, while your at it get the democrats to vote to allow us to drill of the coast then we won't have to worry about the Chinese and Cubans.

Here.

I'll fix it.

It is our understanding that, although Cuba has leased out exploration blocks 60 miles off the coast of southern Florida, which is closer than American firms are allowed to operate in that area, no Chinese firm is drilling there.

YET.

Yeah, I read that too but you neglect the rest of the story.

It is true that China isn't presently drilling off the US coast. It is also true that the Chinese have successfully negotiated with the Cubans for the right to drill there will do so in the future if exploration proves favorable.

America can't even explore there much less drill.

That is just a little white lie compared to the a lot of the other ones cheney and crew have told.

and furthermore...............

Yeah, I read that too but you neglect the rest of the story.

...................they actually have exploratory drilled on Cuban Soil............and if they are successful at "slant drilling" they just might tap into "our"( that oil with-in our legal boundary) oil which is off limits according to Congressional buffoons.

The China/ Cuba connection has been published in various sources since April, 2006.

Part of an article from IBD....................

Politics Off The Table

Mideast investors relish the fact that China doesn't raise ideological issues like human rights with its trading partners — unlike America. They also aren't keen on big U.S. investments since Congress blocked a Dubai-owned firm from taking over major U.S. port facilities in 2006.

Anne Korin, the director of policy and strategic planning at the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security, sees a darker side to Chinese ties with the Middle East.

"The Chinese align their development aid and foreign policy with their energy needs," Korin said.

She cites China's willingness to use its veto in the U.N. Security Council to shield Sudan and Iran from sanctions.Korin also warns that political factors could weigh more heavily than market ones in future oil shipments.

In Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez is shipping generous supplies of crude to Cuba to tweak the U.S. Back in the 1970s, the Arab oil embargo to protest U.S. support for Israel also was about politics.

Given such precedents, she says it's possible that oil could be used as a political weapon in the future.

"As U.S. relations with the Muslim world continue to deteriorate and we continue to see tightness of supply, we're heading for a situation in a couple of decades where five or six nations in the Middle East control the economic health of the world," Korin said. "China wants to make sure it has strong bilateral relationships with these countries."

Now Don, Don't you think that the word lied is just a bit strong. The way it is used in the article you copied and pasted seems very much like propaganda to me. It is as if the word lied was used to make the story more effective.

Would you please give us the source of your story?

Concho Bill

Recent untruths made by Hillary were because she "misspoke".

Cheney also "misspoke" but it becomes a lie to Bush-haters.

I'm sorry but I still cringe when I see Bill Clinton carrying a Bible as he leaves church on Sunday. He committed perjury, meaning he LIED after swearing to tell the truth with his hand on the Bible.

Why doesn't anybody else care?

Let's be factual always only about Republicans and Conservatives. I don't believe Cheney admitted he lied about anything! He admitted to making an error.

Some have different standards for politicians they support!

You probably missed the statement made by the military admitting that they told Hillary and her daugher to be wary of sniper fire when they landed as it had occurred before. It turned out no such problem occurred that day and she got carried away with her campaigning dramatics. Surprise, surprise! No other candidate has ever done that! Right? Sort of like having shuttles running to and from aircraft carrier just off the coast and staging a dramatic military landing for the president! No candidates fudge a little to make their actions seem dramatic and get a good photo op.

Are we being one sided here? Well of course not! :D

By the way, Al Gore never said he invented the internet, but he did lead the fight to support it more than any other politician. He also was the subject of the very popular book and movie, "The Way We Were!" Both were lied about to make him look silly and are still out there today! Sort of like the lies about McCain that started in the 2000 primaries! Who was behind those?? Must have been Jane Fonda or FDR! It couldn't have been the guy he was running against! :D :D

.....The Goron:eek::eek::eek:

Energy Guzzled by Al Gore’s Home in Past Year Could Power 232 U.S. Homes for a Month
Gore’s personal electricity consumption up 10%, despite “energy-efficient” home renovations

NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, An Inconvenient Truth, a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service.
