Cheap Rimfire Thickness Gauge

I thought I'd post this as a way I found of making a rimfire thickness gauge. I found a cheap $25 thickness gauge at Harbor Freight and made a slotted tube that would accept the rimfire cartridges and pressed it into place instead of the fitted post. It's cheap, quick to use, easily accurate to half a thousandth for sorting, and only cost $25 and a little elbow grease. Just press the spring loaded lever, put a cartridge in the slot, release the lever and read the gauge, and then press the lever and turn it sideways to let gravity drop the cartridge out. Couldn't be much simpler or quicker.

Sorry, :D I posted this one so you could make your own. I have no ambitions to go into production.

You can also pick up a .223 case at the range and using a case trimmer (maybe a gun club friend would do it for you) trim it to a convenient length. I use 1.750. Then insert .22 round into .223 case and measure the whole thing and subtract 1.750. Works great for occasional checking rim thickness for curiosity.

I hadn't thought or heard of that one. That's similar to what I was using as my first model. I made just a straight Aluminum tube with a slot and tightening knob on the back to clamp on my caliper. It required opening and closing the caliper for each cartridge as it didn't have the slot in the side that this one does and took a good deal more time. This one's fast enough to encourage me to sort more.
