changing th barrel on my Remington 798

I would really like to put a 26' heavy barrel on my remington 798 30-06. Would any brand 30-06 barrles work, or do i need to look for a specific type of barrel that is ment for the gun. If you all could help my out and give me a few pointers i would much appretiate it.

You will need to buy a barrel blank and have a smith machine it to fit. The 798 is a Mauser clone.

If you change the contour of the barrel, you are going to have to address the stock, either with hogging out the inside or switching to a different stock.

Do the latest 98 clones have the 12tpi shanks or a metric version?

Mausers are metric...

Mausers are metric, it just that the metric is close enough to 12 tpi that it's ignored. I think it's 2.1 mm thread.

My brother has a Douglas barrel on his VZ24 in 308 Win. It's great.
