Case Preperation

Gentlemen- I have been trimming my cases, as needed, with a Wilson case trimmer. My question is: does anyone here also trim the base of the case to (hopefully) make it square to the neck trimming? I'm just curious as to what others are doing. I don't know if base trimming is necessary or not. Don't know if it amounts to a hill of beans, or if it's just a waste of time. Love to hear your inputs.

At the very least, it's a waste of time and if overdone could actually be dangerous as it reduces the thickness of the solid head. It also would change the depth of the primer pocket. Nope, avoid the temptation to 'square' the heads and make 'em look nice.

Beyond what Gene said, case trimmers are not as precise as lathes. Back in the day, I thought that I would try squaring up the heads of my .222 cases using my Wilson case trimmer. It did not take too long for me to discover that the cutter started taking off material in the same place, in relation to the trimmer, on every case. Then the light came on. Since the cases were not indexed in any way, what I was seeing was a slight misalignment built into the tool. After that, I called Wilson and they confirmed that their trimmers are not designed for this sort of thing. This is not to say that they do not make very good trimmers, just that if you use one to square case heads, you may in fact make them less square, as I did.
