I shoot NRA 1600 prone matches with an old CMP 40X (722 based). It would be nice to have an adjustable cheek piece and butt plate. A fellow shooter is willing to sell me one of his old anschutz 3P stocks. How much work would it be to mount my gun in that stock? If the anschutz stock isn't worth the trouble which brand(s) stock should I be looking at? I have a tight budget. Before this offer I was looking at putting David Tubb,s 4-way butt plate on my stock.

Russ,
Drop in - NO.
Its possible to put a 40X in an Anschutz Prone stock, but it will take a good amount of work. The position stock (1413) is really worse and something you wouldn't want to tackle.
Heres the problem All different brand actions except 2 have different receiver screw spacing and different positions of bolt root cuts.
The Anschutz has a front and middle screw, the 40X has a front and rear screw.
Certain actions are easier than others and they are not these two.
You are better off getting a semi finished stock for a 40X and going from there.

We were talking about this today...
If the stock is wide enough for the action.
You need to fill all cut outs and rebed the X.
R 700's are put in to that stock, for CF or 300M.
Look at it and figure out the work and go for it.
I'll bet a quarter it is doable.

There's a guy in Ponca City Ok that makes Anshutz style stocks for 40x's and 52's. I have seen a number of them shooting 3p down there. Even one junior size version. They accept all Anshutz accessories. I don't remember his name or contact, but if your interested I will check on it. They are aluminum with laminated pistol grip and cheek piece.
