I seen this barel once that was profiled like a baton I gess. It had a big end then was turned down then another big end. Somebody said it wa a Calfee Xpansion Barrel. I reckon he laps it, turns the middle then laps to mathc. Anybody know of anybody usiig one of these and whether or not they are doing any good.

Sorry about the typing.

I'm guessing from your discription you're talking about a sporter barrel taper with the "lump" on the end. Lots of them out there, shooting well.

No, baarrel supposedly had n expansion chamber. Very thin in the middel and about average on the end. Not a sporter profile. I saw a picture of a Calfee pistol with one. Interesting but didnt really understand the idea. Guess nothing ever came of it.

The idea I think was to make it easier to get in tune, for a barrel that just would not come around. I saw a Turbo like that, but it wasn't long before that barrel went in the junk box and another was put on. That one didn't work. *But, I saw an XP pistol like that that shot exceptionally well too!

I remember seeing one on a pistol. That pistol shot very well. I wouldn't mind having one on a pistol if it would shoot good just for the "cool" factor.

Shilen

I remember several years back, that Shilen had such a barrel in their Catalog. I believe it was a Silhouette Barrel.

When I used to shoot back in the 70s we had a guy who would downplay any innovation as "we used to have that back in the 40's". Rimfire shooters must not be good at building on innovation. But I guess there's only so many ways to build a rifle. I wonder if back in the 40's there was some guy saying "we had that back in '08".

It sounds like what Benchrester is describing may be one of the sporter barrels with a built in "muzzle device" and recessed crown that Calfee developed some time back for use where external tuners were not allowed from what I have read. Its an interesting concept but I'm not sure what became of it...

Happy Shooting,
Mitch & Shadow...

No, not sperter profile. Think of it as an inch long turndown (longer but this gets the idea) in the middle of the barrell.

Is this what your talking about?

It shoots good but I think the reasoning in doing it was to not have to lap so much in the back to get a good taper.

Might the turned down section be to make the short relatively stiff barrel (compared to one the same diameter but longer) flex more so the tuner can do its job.

That's really interesting.... Has that been done on a modern rimfire rifle yet..?

Beau,

Everyone is referring to this DJ piece as a pistol. Do you consider this a rifle, or are you just that bored and need to play with semantics? I'm looking to see if a Sporter or 10.5 lb rifle has this barrel design.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I consider it a rifle. The only thing it lacks is shoulder stock, which is not a requirement in BR at least the one I play. I have one made just like it except for the barrel and the fact that it's in a McMillan Edge.

I think the BATF considers it a pistol since it was manufactured as such in the XP-100 guise to begin with.
That piece of DJ's will outshoot most rifles I've seen.
