im obviously an FNG but i dont know anyone who can answer this for me so i hope you guys can

first ill give you guys stats on my gun and load just so you know. i shoot a .223 with a 24" 1-14 barrel. new gun im still trying to find the right load but right now im throwing a 50 grain bullet with 26.2 grains of H335 behind it. shooting from 400-500yds. i havent tried any boat-tailed bullets and im wondering if they make a big difference or should i just be looking at the BC?

also i know using the berger bullets that i do right now a 2.330 COL puts them touching the rifling. how far back from the rifling should i be seating my bullets? right on it? .005 or .010 back? or is this on a gun-to-gun basis? like i said im an FNG any help is much appreciated!!

id have to say neither easy nor fast. its alot like drag racing in the sense that getting an 2" 400 yard group isnt too hard, but getting a 1.25 group takes WAY more attention to detail. kinda like how 500hp might give you an 11 second car but it may take over a 1000hp to get that same car under into the low 10's

this is fairly obious but i think benchrest shooting is entirely about controling as many variables as possible. the more varibles you eliminate or control the more acurate you will be.

Your running a 14 twist that leaves you stuck in the 40 to 56 gr bullet range. For long range shooting you should go with a faster twist.
The 223 case has set some records in high power over the last 10 yeras or so. Many loads are on 6mm br.com. You will find a good number of proven loads there. That group shoots way out there past 600 yds,
I think most of your questions on long range shooting will be answered there. That group of peopple are really helpful. Some of them are also here on this site. The key is a faster twist and heavier bullets at long ranges.
I hope this helps you some .

I shoot 2 different 223's @ 100-200 yards,25.0 grs of vithv n133,lapua brass. 7 1/2 or fed 205gm primers and 52 gr fowler/scheider accuracy flat base bullets, both like a little jump(.020-.045) I also coat my bullets

the wind is my friend,,,,,,,,,,,

so are my bullets just not still spinning fast enough by the time they get out there to keep them stable? or is because they are tiny and easily pushed around? also what if I'm running 3500fps? will faster help them remain accurate out past 300? because they would be spinning faster and spend less time in flight thus less effected by the wind.

also if 1-14 twist is not very good at long ranges why the heck do they even make barrels with that twist rate? then put them on varmit rifles thats are obiously intended for long range? because cant you fire 40 grainers pretty good out of something with even a 1-9 like an AR?

not saying your wrong because i know your right. just wondering what the advantage is, if any to having a 1-14 twist rate?
