Building a 20 Vartarg

I'm looking at building a new 20 VarTarg. My normal process (as in the past with all my custom guns) is to order a barrel, have a quality gunsmith fit & chamber (including action trueing) and I do the rest of the work. I enjoy fitting and bedding barreled actions. I do all the trigger work, fitting magazines, finishing stocks etc. Here's my uncertainty...

I have a vintage Rem 722, chambered in .222 I bought many years ago at an estate auction reasonable, meaning ~$200. It is in near perfect condition and all factory original. I did shoot it some, but was never satisfied with the acuracy. (I do shoot competetive BR including groups, hunter classes and playing in the 600 yard game some) I should add I did bed the action in the original stock!!

So, do you guys think I should use this action? The reason i'm tossing and turning on this issue is not the quality of the action or the final product, but if I use it then another 722 OEM will bite the dust!!!

thanks for your thought's!

A decade or so ago I broke down and re-barrelled, re-triggered and restocked the 722, 222 that I bought back in '59 or so. It was my first-ever centerfire rifle, but inch groups were no longer any fun to shoot. It's still a 222, however. Somehow, I just gotta always have a deuce. Hart RB did the metal work. No regrets.

I had my VarTarg built on a Borden Alpine single-shot action, using a Hart 1 in 12 barrel in HV contour. Truely a death ray. You're gonna love the .20 VT.

Regards

Westy: I will buy the Remington 722 in 222 Remington from you (if you price it reasonably).
I have owned several of these 722's over the years and find myself down to just one at present!
Then with my monies, you can look for a Remington 700 Short Action to use as the basis for your 20 VarTarg!
You might even look for a Remington XP-100 pistol in 221 Remington Fireball for its action to use for your project.
I had a heavy Varmint Rifle built on a Remington XP-100 pistol action and it is one of the best shooting, best looking Rifles I have ever owned (new 700 style bolt handle added)!
Or the Remington XR-100 Rifle has an awfully handsome action and one of these would sure make a nifty 20 VarTarg Varminter!
For "nostalgia's sake" DON'T ruin another 722 - please.
Hold into the wind

there is a guy in Mobile, Al. that may have something you are looking for. I think his name is Parrish Davis. He is a gun builder-varmint and sporters. He has sold some guns on BR Central, as a matter of fact my shooting buddy bought a 20 vartarg from him and it shoots really good. I talked to him recently abut a 22-250 he has. I do not know his phone or e-mail address but you could probably find it on one of these forums.

I built my 20 VT from my first 204R barrel...rechambered it to the VT..the bbl had 2500+ rds through it..it spins out the 40 V max @ 3554 fps on a modest charge of H322..I prefer Win reformed 223 cases...yes labor intensive...but Rem 221 FB are acceptable..great cartridge...punches holes in p/dogs out to 500 yds..under calm conditions...I assembled mine myself using a Savage 12 s/shot action & Pac Nor barrel...very accurate and no recoil in my 15# rifle...

I did the exact thing

you are thinking of doing. The first center fire rifle i ever fired(i think)
A 722 in 222 the barrel was shot, rusted out and wouldn't shoot when it came to me.(Another story)
I have no regrets, didn't enjoy shooting it in original condition, now it is one of my favorites.

Please

Do not use this action for a build. As Varmint Hunter mentioned they are getting too hard to find.
I am sure that you can get enough $$ from the rifle to buy a new action and a Jewell trigger. You are probally not going to use the 722 stock and the two piece sear trigger , good for their time, really leave a lot to be desired.
