Buffalo Shoot in Midland Texas

Doug Penttinen

"TESTED TEXAS TUFF"
I have been to the range in Midland< Texas just one time and it was for the Nationals a few years ago.
I have a pretty good Idea where the range is but I was wondering if someone could re-fresh my memory
I am going to try and plan to go to the Buffalo shoot in September and would like to know the motels in the area and directions to the range...

Midland Range

Well it seems as though I found out how to get to the range in Midland. Nothing like Google Maps

Doug,
I guess that the google map showed you that the range is right off of FM 1213. A lot of the shooters stay at the Comfort Inn which is a 1/2 block west of the intersection(on the north side) of I-20 and Hwy 349. It is the closest motel to the range, not the cheapest but the closest. 349 runs south to 1213 and it's a left turn to 1213. Comfort Inn has a fairly complete breakfast. It's a pretty nice motel. See you at the range

Best,
Dan Batko

"Where are we going and why am I in this basket?"

Abandon all hope ye who enter here

Doug, There is a reason why you have not been to Midland in a while and in your Alzheimer induced dementia you have forgotten it: the residents. Neglect for the moment the heat, insects, dirt, wind and post apocalyptic scenery. The locals are the key to the problem there. With people like Baggett, Conry, Huckabee and the like the place is a carnival of human psychological pathology. You have probably heard about bang sticks a 12 gauge shell on the end of a pole to control sharks. Well, they have Thorazine sticks issued to the Midland police for use on the local population. I hear for Larry they have an extra long 12 foot pole and even then they won't touch him. Tim

The most desolete part of Texas is better than Bayonne, New Jersey, and so are the Texas natives therein.

Thanks Dr. Tim

Now I remember why.... It did have something to do with the dirt and gualling of my bolt
But now that you mention the probing stick at first I thought you were speaking of a wind probe Ha!!

Even with all that it still sounds like a couple of interesting days there rather than my office...

When I pulled the range up on Google maps it all came back to me as to why I forgot
Hope to see everyone out there

So, that's what the sticks were I saw at Midland one year. They looked like a 10 foot fiberglass whip antenna stuck in the ground running parallel to the ground and pointing toward the target. I think it was a AJ invention, one of the few that didn't pan out. It did look like a good way to get rid of all those instruments in front of the bench that cause wind turbulence. It looked like it would swing to the right and knock all the ones on the right down and then swing to the left and knock all those down on that side. Pretty soon, you'd be able to shoot some good groups without all those wind generators running stirring up the wind currents.

Midland and Odessa have some of the best people you will ever meet and some of the toughest. The land is flat and hot, there is little water, and the dust blows. These good people know what work is. You have to have some good in you to live there or else you could not stand it.

Do you remember Little Jessica, the child who fell down the well a few years ago. She was in Odessa. Those people moved heaven and earth and got her out. The heart of the oil business in this country is in that area.

I have found good people all over this country. There are none better than those who live in that area. They are people like me.
