Buffalo People

The common misconception of the American Bison is that of a peaceful herbivore grazing upon prairie grass a symbol of the American West with its visage on the nickel. The mention of this animal conveys a gentle feeling of nostalgia. The biological reality is in stark contrast to the myth. The actual animal was the American equivalent of the African Cape Buffalo, an irritable 1500 pounds of 4 hoofed fury, unpredictable and dangerous as hell. This unsavory beast shares a lot in common with the average shooter at this weekend Buffalo Match in Midland, Tx. I mean there are such people as Cecil Tucker, the man who once chased an entire gang of Hell's Angles out of Odessa with a single fart. There is Scott Haywood who has been in countries that even terrorists are leery of. His one comment on these places is "Jeese, They were so friendly!" I hate to break it to you, Scott. They must have found out that you were from Midland Odessa and said to themselves "Who! I don't want a piece of that". There were others such as Mike Conry and Charles Hucabee whose names are in the pantheon with luminaries like Atilla the Hun, Hitler, Stalin, Ivan the Terrible and Teresa Oltersdorf. They may call the wind Mariah in Oklahoma but in Midland the names are much more varied and colorful. So if you have a late age crisis and need to prove yourself come out this weekend. Be a man, experience West Texas until you fart dust. Shoot the Buffalo!

Dr. Tim, your post made my morning...especially the above part. Every year in my State, a hapless out-of-state tourist or three get an up close and personal experience in just how nasty and unpredicable these beasts are. I witnessed one such encounter last October in Custer State Park. Natural selection at it's most basic level! ;) -Al

I watched (from a safe distance) one of those beasts peacefully meandering along in Yellowstone, then, for no apparent reason, it charged, engaged and fought with a small cedar-type bush/tree. Strange!

Excellent announcement Dr Tim. When I see one of them majestic animals, Buffalo/Bison, I think of the Midland Match.

I also think of the very delicious Bison burgers that i’ve eaten in the past. Best burger I’ve ever had.

Good shooting at the Buffalo.

Buffalo do what buffalo do. Which is whatever they want to do, at that moment.

The only common theme when a buffalo and human get crossways (what we we call 'tourist tossin' out here ;)) is the state license plate on the newly departed's/nearly departed's vehicle......

Or "car tippin".....

My wife's uncle trained animals for Disney, he and LLoyd Beebe were "the big animal and bear guys". We were taking our kids through their drive-thru area where all the signs said "DON'T FEED THE ANIMALS!!!" and the car behind us started reaching out the winder holding pastries and travel snacks. We pulled over and asked them to stop but......."tourists".......

One other guy got licked .... and it hurt.......and rolled his windows up.

Anyways, couple hudred feet further my kids were treated to the sight of a buffalo casually sticking a horn into the window, picking the car up to about 35* until the point of the horn came through the roof and then just shaking it's head....a little. The roof and door buckled.

The only smart thing the guy did was crawl into the back seat so the poor bull was exposed to the full bollyume of the wife's screams

BTW cow tippin' is fake, never happened..... jus' sayin' ;)

ALSO BTW..... the tagline on that video pi$$es me off just a wee..... "viciously attacked her" my achin'ass......

Buffalo bring two thoughts to my mind. A local "bondholder" Huffines group have a high fence ranch about 8 miles from our house. They have exotics and a herd of 40 buffalo. My cousin is supervising the construction of a 4 lane loop around Quinlan. They took in a part of the ranch. The buffalo destroyed one of their company trucks.
The other is about 25 years ago traveling to Midland for the Buffalo shoot I stopped at Harold Broughton's place for a short visit. I left there with Harold's Shiloh Sharps long range express. Can't forget Harold as he was a very unique person!

Buffalo

The real Deal. This is what the competition is like at the Buffalo.

Ron Prachyl has been trying to con me into going on one of his African Safari hunts. Offered me a deep BR shooter discount.
