Howdy all, we have a Japanese Browning ATD (Browning Auto 22) (BA) and it is not shooting well 1-2 inch groups at 33 yds we just got it but we know the guy we bought it from and he has not abused it. Says he always cleaned from the breech oiled it etc. He bought it new and has had about 1K rounds through it. I was hoping we could get it to shoot better but she is not cooperating. Have tried cleaning well, tightening the barrel up it seems to lock up, new scope, and nothing easy seems to help.
Any suggestions?
Barrels can someone make a heavier match barrel for this 22? AND......
Looked at Numerich for a replacement barrel their diagram shows a barrel as #8 part yet it is not listed.
If you think this is a barrel problem I would like to replace it but would like to get a new one not too interested in sending it back to Browning. I have had a couple of unfavorable experiences with them in customer service. Thank you for your help STBE

check the crown with a magnifyer for dings. If it looks ok, try as many different brands of ammo as you can. And don't clean it so much. My experience tells me that most rimfires shoot better dirty.

Harris,
I've been there with a browning. The real problem with them is the takedown mechanism allowing the barrel to come loose & flop around. I went so far as to thread a used Anshutz barrel for the little browning as a non-takedown. You can tighten them down, but the beating of the bolt will vibrate the barrel loose after a while.

I thought it was a fun little project, but the original barrel went back on the rifle, & the anshutz was put on another rifle where it did better.

RJm what kinda groups did you get with the Annie barrel?

I have read on Rimfire dot com forum that some folks are getting .5 at 50 that would be stellar in this rifle at 33! Dont knowif that is something I want to believe.

What size groups are you'all getting with your standard Browning Autos?

Rft I will check the crown

Thanks

I've had both and they both shot about the same, 3/4 to 1 inch at 50 yards. Sure there are a few smaller groups but day in and day out that's about average. I don't think that's to bad from a two piece four pound rifle with a three pound trigger and four power scope. That's with copper plated hunting ammo, haven't bothered with match ammo, waste of ten dollar a box Eley to shoot jackrabbits.

Harris,
As I recall, the rebarrelled browning shot OK, but not great. Maybe 1/2" at 50 yds. It's been quite a while since I did this.

Afterward, the barrel was put on a Ruger 10/22 and it did not shoot any better. The 10/22 was sold to a silhouette shooter who is very happy with it.
