greetings all,

is there a minimum bbl length for br-50???

if not.. got a 52 c with a heavy bbl. if i could find a tite spot in the bore at around 17" would like to chop that rascal off at the tite spot.that along with a viani scope mount to brace the action should help with some of the 'flippers'.
don't think that a barrel that ain't there can flip..:D:D

thanks and ..ttfn..grampa..

fred,
you are rite. the bbl would have to be as thick as possible and as short as possible. the viani scope mount would stiffen up the action quite a bit. for a stock, would have to find a material that grows and shrinks as little as possible with temp changes.

there may be better actions than a 52 c or d. but, i like 52's they do square up nicely.

with a slightly negitive head space. the rascal should shoot.

where could one find a copy of the rules for br-50?? would like to know what is legal and what is not..

tia and ..ttfn..grampa..

BR 50 has been dead for years. If you go to the Benchrest Central Home page, link at top of this page, you will see logo's for the current associations and clicking on those logo's will take you to each's web page and rules. ARA is the simplest to explain. There are no rules restricting guns except that it must be 22 RF.

Both RBA and IR50/50 have Unlimited classes as well and gun weight is not a problem and also one piece rests are also allowed. As for a barrel. I'd just put a .850-.900 custom straight barrel 'bout 24-25" long on it.

Benchmark

You might look into having a Benchmark Reverse Taper put on. They appears to have the best record overall in ARA. The Winchester 52c,D & E actions, are excellent actions to build on. You will need to instala a filler in the C action to close the hole for the clip. The triggers can be modified to a comfortable benchrest level. There are still ample parts available from Outback Guns. The action is case hardened, so drilling and tapping the receiver will cost a little extra, but worth it. One of mine, shares the old BR-50 Record as well as winning the ARA National and BR-30 Australian Nationals. Once the factory barrel goes away, it's time for a change, but they are great actions. Good luck.

don, thanks.. that's just what i was looking for..

kent. thanks for the info. but that bbl length and dia. is what i want to get away from.. was thinking about 1.25 dia and a lenght of 9-10" with a heavy bloop tube welded on to make minimum atf legal. think it's still 16". to me, it doesn't make sense to put a long thin bbl on a gun and then hang dampers and weights on it to keep the muzzle from flipping..

fred, thanks for the comforting words about the 52 actions. it's good to know you got one that not only shoots, but shoots great.

from what you said, i will go with the 'D'. have one with the standard dia bbl. it shoots alrite if i hang an anchor chain on the muzzle.:p

if you have any more ideas, please post them. such as, where to get a 1.25 dia bbl 10''s long.

thanks and ..ttfngrampa..

PS.. think short fat bbls are going to be the future od 22 br shooting.

Good luck with it! Let us know how it works out. 52's are good actions, I have 4 of 'em myself but I don't shoot but one of them as a squirrel rifle. It's a sporter.

kent, i envy your sporter. been looking for a 52 'c' sporter for years. i'm about ready to give up.:(

gotta go, theres a gene autry movie about to start on the tube..

greetings fred, you may be rite. don't know that much about 22's. howsomever, do have an anschutz 2002ca pellet gun. that raSCAL WILL PUT 10 SHOTS THRU THE SAME HOLE AT 50'. OOPS HIT THE SHIFT LOCK.: thats not a ragged hole but the same hole. the actual bbl length is only 7" the rest of the length is a bloop tube.

i could be wrong, but when i hear about someone having a bbl length of 25'' and then having to hang stuff on the end to make it shoot good. i'm hearing, "i made the bbl too long and too thin and now i have to crutch it".:)

thanks and ..ttfn..grampa..

Agreed

Your reasoning is sound, if you had the same control over the velocity of a 22 rf. My Styre 88 produces an average velocity of 596fps +/- 2fps. at 10 feet in front of the muzzle. At 10 meter's for which the gun was designed for, it also will produce a very tight one hole group. The actual barrel is around 12" long. The best I have been able to acheive with a 22rf, with factory ammo, is still not up to that same potential. There a quite a few variables when shooting a 22rf outdoors at 50 or 100 yards. I feel the long barrel, with a barrel tuning device, will give be better control over a barrel similiar to that in most Air Rifles. I feel the optimum accuracy will be acheived with a barrel between 20 to 28 inches in length. I like them as long as the barrel will let me have.

If your Annie air rifle shoots like you say I'd forget the rimfire and shoot AGBR and be a world record holder and win the nationals this year.;)
