Bore Sighting at 1K

This may actually personify the saying" I'd rather be lucky than good" .

Had a new scope for my rifle and hadn't mounted it or zero'd it at all but wanted to take it to a 1K prone match.

My brother and I mounted the scope on the rifle and then bore sighted it at 1K yds. We centered the target in the bore and then brought the scope dot to the center of the target.

One brilliant man suggested that, based on the 6mm cartridge, we should put 24 MOA of elevation on the scope and fire a shot.

The first shot out of the rifle was a 9 at three o'clock on the target. We almost stopped right there as we were going to get our car and go buy a lottery ticket.

We all had a laugh on our good luck.

Bob,

Your brilliant man didn't realize how good your brother and you are at bore sighting. If he had accounted for spin drift correction in his instructions (about 1 1/2 moa of left) you'd have had an X! That should give you confidence!

Bob,

A fellow I know has twice brought a gun pretty much from the gunsmith to a match - with bad results both times. First time found that due to some mismatch between the scope range of adjustment, the scope rail, and how things were mounted he ended up maxed out on elevation just reaching the 6 ring @ 300yds, and the second time he showed up with a 7mm-something-or-other, someone else's load data, zero rounds through the gun and trying to get on paper @ 800yds. Luckily he brings backup rifles with him... Last time I made a comment to the effect that normally I prefer to go through such aggravations in the privacy of the local club range - preferably when no one else is around!

As mentioned you definitely should have gotten a lottery ticket!

Greg,

Isn't 1.5 moa a bit much?

Monte

Hi Monte,

Yes. Shooter for Android seems to say 0.2 moa. My Palma rifle show about 1.3 moa at 300 off a 1k no-wind zero and all my rifles seem to shoot right at long range compared to a short range zero. When I rely on the "Culpepper Got It With You All The Time Wet Finger (digital) In The Wind Analog Computer" it tells me more drift than the actual rocket scientists predict. Maybe I cant my rifles. Maybe my zero isn't really zero. Good catch. I hope not to mislead anyone.

Gregg,

Ed and I stayed at the range till about 7:30 pm on Friday evening enjoying adult beverages and snacks and kept laughing at that bore sighting adventure. What are the odds that you could bring a new scope and rings together and hit the target with the first shot.

To do that at 100 yds is common, at 600 yds pretty lucky, and at 1K, well maybe I used up all my luck on Friday evening. Should have saved some of it for the matches on Sat. and Sun.

When we were bore sighting, I had forgotten my glasses and couldn't see the target in the bore. Ed had to align the target in the bore and I centered up the scope on target. Guess our errors stacked up in the right direction that time.

It was fun shooting with both you and Pete. Hope our paths cross again.

Bob,

Same here. It was fun to share your "family reunion". The best part of the weekend for me was our very leisurely Sat. morning under the canopies waiting for the rain to let up and the targets to show themselves. Are you and Ed coming to Butner next month for either match? Its almost in the middle for you and Ed like Oak Ridge is and about the same distance as well. Pete will be there also.

Gregg,

Actually, Ed and I are headed to Marshall, Mo for the Missouri State MR Championship. This is a really great Fall match that is well attended. The cook-outs after the match on Saturday are out-of-this-world.

Have fun at Butner.

Bob

Bob and Ed,

Have fun in Missouri. We'll miss you in Butner.
