Bore off center....

Guys I am playing with a HMR that has the bore drilled off center. Damn thing is spraying bullets. It has a rough crown and I am currently going to have a little bit of the barrel cut off and recrowned, will this fix the problem. thanks Kirby
 
Cutting a new crown properly, parallel(square to) with the bore shouldn't do any harm. Does the ammo you're shooting shoot well in other rifles? I've read some of the recent HMR ammo doesn't seem to shoot up to par, compared to the early stuff. Just heresay though, I don't have an HMR.

Kent: This is my second HMR and the only one I have ever put on bags past siting in. Even if the barrel is good the ammo that I tested was such crap that I still may get rid of it. I used six different kinds of ammo from 3manufacters. All of it varied especially the hornady. I have 0 doubt that the eley mach 2 ammo is much more consistant and at 4.25 a box in places that means I can get exactly 3 boxes to every 1 box of HMR ammo. Only reason I bought the damn thing was the wood and the fact that I read so much about the caliber driving tacks at 50yds. I had a .22 and a box of Wolf Match Extra, consistency compared to the HMR ammo was not even close.

As you probably already know, there'sa list of things to check when a rifle acts erratic. Bedding, scope, scope bases if applicable. Sometimes a front screw will be long enough to bottom against the barrel shank. Then sometimes the front guard screw will be too long, and bottom against the barrel shank. Firing pin draggin on trigger sear because stop is set too close is another reason, and causes firing pin drag, and inconsistent ignition.
Sometimes it takes a while to find the problem, and unfortunately sometimes you never do.
A good friend of mine has one of the .17 MKII's and it shoots pretty well at 50 yards. I'd say in the .3-.4 range. It's a 1710 HB Anschutz. Nothing like our match rifles in .22LR but plenty adequate for what it was designed for.
Good luck with yours, and let me know what you might find out to cure it. It's always interesting to see how some of these little problems work out.
 
Checked the screw, being too long. Nope. Checked the bases, rings, and scope, nope. Will have a look at the firing pin, if nothing there and after paying for a crown job, not likely I will pay for a bedding job. Gave nearly 500 for this thing and best groups are the size of my fist at 50yds. Kirby
 
loosen off the action screws a touch, believe it or not they can be toooo tight. Shoot groups and adjust the torque on the screws as well and see if that makes a difference.
 
What about barrel contact?

I have a CZ 17 HRM which did not shoot like the test target that came with the rifle. It turned out that the forend of the stock was touching the barrel on the right side. I figure the wood must have moved after the rifle was factory tested.

A little sand paper on a wooden dowel made for a free floating barrel and a little Kiwi shoe polish buffed into the barrel channel made it look untouched and moisture proof.

The result? It now shoots a pretty tight group at 100yds. and a bug hole at 50.

Hope your problem is something easy to fix like this.

Done the torque screw thing. If they are not pretty tight, groupse are worse. Barrel is floated all the way to the action. Hopefully this crown will fix the deal. Thanks and keep them coming...Kirby
