"Boots" Obermeyer and his barrels--thinking back

In a previous thread Joe Maisto had given reference to an American Rifleman story on Boots Obermeyer. Last night while waiting for Santa I found a AR article , February 1983, a barrel making story by C. E. Harrison that had an interesting story with many pictures. A couple of these pictures were made in Mr. Obermeyers shop.

I recently chambered a 'new' McMillan barrel that Jeff Summers gave me that was made about that same time. Straightest barrel I've ever had in my lathe.

How many of you have shot an Obermeyer barrel?

How competitive would these "old" barrels be today?

Last time I talked with Boots he hadn't done any short range barrels in many years. You may know he has been doing work for the military, and not just for this country either. He has also done some in 30mm. If you take a look now and then at the equipment list for the 1000yd. guys, you will see a couple of his barrels.
He is very independant and at this point does not need to make a name for himself, for he has already done that.
I spoke to a barrel maker at last years SS that calls Boots when he has any questions, and this individual is no beginner by any means.
He...in his trade..is not unlike one Mr. Mike Walker...in his .

McMillan Barrels

Ahhh yes McMillan a work of art...In the old days I only purchased McMillan or Matco barrels...I believe the McMillan barrels were better than the bullets being produced in those days...It was just the best barrel available...IMO

I own several Obermeyer barrels....in several calibers.... I thread and chamber my own rifles and others. I`ve worked and shot with Krieger,Bartlien,Pac-Nor,douglas,mcgowan,snake river,brux,border,lilja and shilen.If I had a choice I would take an Obermeyer first.Boots still shoots competitively and successfully as does any barrel he`s made.He unlike others will stand behind his barrels....he is a metallurgist,machinist,inventor and lucky for us he has trained many other barrel makers.
He is a contributing asset to the shooting community.....
