Bolt finish touch-up

I need to touch-up the factory matte black finish on a Rem 700 bolt handle after turning and threading for a new knob.

I was hopping to avoid completely stripping the existing finish?

Any recommendations?

Bolt finish

Birchwood Case sells a black finish kit. It is a multi chemical and heating process that can be done in home.

You can coat the bolt with motor oil and heat it is a outdoor grill for about an hour and it will develope a dark finish. I would not heat it higher than 400 degrees. There are several thrreads about this process on Home Shop Machinist and the Practical Machinist web sites.
