Hya Guy,
I am thinking of getting a match barrel from Boarder Barrels and wanted to get some views on what people think of their barrels. I currently have a selected Anschutz 1913 and it is shooting well but I am looking to kind of upgrade it to something that can hold better.

If you have a Boarder Barrel what do you make of it, do you get consistant runs with it. Has there been any match winners and who were they and what kind of scores did they get.

Any Info would ne great.

If you can get them

Andy:
I have a Border on my Hall, and with the correct ammo, it's a winner. I shoot ARA here in Texas, so it's a a bit difficult to compare the conditions in the UK with ours. If you can get a Border,go with it. You are close enough to go to the Eley Test site to find the ammo that works the best.

Thanks Gambler for the contact.

Hi Fred,
With my Anschutz i find that when shooting a target it seems to shoot fine till it gets half way through the target then goes off, my thoughts is this due to the heat which happens due the fowling and then after another 3 shots it seems to come back. do you have this kind of problem with a Border Barrels or is it much better at hadleing the heat.
I have also been told that i need to go for a tight fit, a bit like using Lapua Midas ammo that has a tight fit it, would you agree with this setup.

many thanks, AndyD

Hi Fred,
Another question on this, do you use a tuner with the Boarder Barrel if not why?

Cheers, AndyD

Andy,
A good friend of mine has a Turbo with a Border barrel and another friend has a few of 'em on BR rifles. Theirs shoot exceptionally well. I guess it's like all barrels, some are better than others, but all I've seen of the Borders shot well. Of course they use tuners on them. My friends has a Harrel tuner on it with no weight added. If they were readily available here I'd have a couple of 'em and test 'em myself.
Right now I'm playing with an experimental barrel(not Border) that I had made up, and it's shooting about as good as they get, right from the start. Using old ammo(Eley RN) to sight it in and fiddle with the tuner for ten minutes, first target was a 249-16X with velocity of 1046 fps, second target was 248-15X with old 2005 EPS ammo at 1050 fps. Then I shot a box of new 2009 Eley Tenex @1060 fps. and shot a 250-18X. with several more almost X's. The first showing shows promise, shoots hard wind super, hopefuly more tuning and it'll do better.

Andy:

I just my 40X back from Gene Davis last month and he installed a 2 groove, 1-16.5" twist Border reverse taper barrel on it.. I could not be happier.. I shot two ARA matches the beginning of this month, one a tournament and one a club match.. I came in 5th. in the tournament with a 2187.5000 agg with two 2300 targets and I came in 6th. in the Club match with a 2350 target.. Gene done a great job on my 40X and I am extremely happy with my Border Barrel..

All I know is what Gene told me and he said a 2 groove, 1-16.5 twist, reverse taper Border Barrel.. Border or Benchmark, I'm happy..

Hya Guys,

It’s interesting bringing up about the groves as on their website they say they can do up to 6 groves and generally these are the ones are used, would you say that this would be the way to go on a 6 grove or not.

On Speaking to Boarder Barrels they say that it would be better to be reamed and set for 220 Swift, this is so that it is a tighter fit of the round, and would you agree with this, if not what reamed would you go for.

Cheers, AndyD

My best Guess

My Border will shoot pretty consistent for around 35 shots. Then it will start spraying shots. I have to clean after every target. I have been able to control a lot of the spraying of shots, with the use of tuners. Maybe it's over kill, but that seems to be the trend in the US. I use a Harrell tuner with a J & J Long Noodle and I also use a Heinrich Mid-Barrel tuner. It seems to like the long over the short Noodle. Seems like it took for ever, but I think I've got it shooting for longer shot counts and tight groups. My biggest problem, is too many guns and too few chances to shoot them all. With my wife and I both shooting at matches, many times we shoot the same setup. To make it easier, I need to use the guns with similar stocks, so we can use just one Pappas rest. Dorothy likes her Suhl & Benchmark barrel, and if you don't know by now, I prefer my 52D. The 52, now sports a Shilen Rachet barrel. All of my guns use the same tuner set up, but I need a secretary to keep track of all the tuner settings and what ammo each one prefers.
