Gents,

I've found a Blake Co Axial Indicator Set used, complete, and in good shape for $150.

1) Is this a good price? I've checked Ebay price wise, and it's not much help, so I'm having trouble determining a good, used price. New, their about $250.

2) Are they worth having around in the gunsmith type of shop?

As always, thanks for your help.

Justin;
I've used one quite a bit, years ago. Very good instrument...but...then I got an Accu-Rite with the electronic center/edge finder, and "wow", that's like going to heaven...!!!!!!!!!

I have a brand new one in the box that is unused in 10 yrs., but by god I got one.

Butch,

That's funny! I got some stuff like that. In fact, I have a Brown & Sharpe vernier-thingy that no one has been able to tell me what it is and how it's suppossed to work. But it sure is cool looking! Maybe I'll post a pic...

I use mine every single day and it's a big time/hassle saver.

A great supplement to this is a set of threaded hole location gauges sold by MSC. They are a spring loaded collet type threaded stub that you screw into the action holes, then sweep the indicator around the ground pins on the opposite side. Great for measuring exact center to center hole locations on receivers when setting up a stock for inletting or for double checking a floor metal's hole location/compatibility.

BUY THE TOOL!:D

If you decide not to, send me the link on Ebay and I'll buy it for that price. :D

Be aware they take up a lot of real estate; working with certain set ups on the mill you may not have enough z travel.

Co ax indicator

I wonder if I could hold this indicator with a collet chuck and use it to align the tailstock on the lathe. The stylus could run around a center or in the t/s bore. Aybody ever used it like this? I have one of the ind. also I have used it on the mill a couple of times, it saves some time but takes up some room as mentioned.

I've used one... Although, I don't own one

JOHN LINEBAUGH uses one to indicate cyclinders in for his famous pistols. Like to own one. They look pretty simple to make. All you need is a good indicator. Or get a copy of the "The Machinist's Third Bedside reader" by Guy Lautard page #83. Drawing and every bit of info you need. So think of it this way. If you buy it you didn't learn anything.

Mr. Colchester:

I have used mine in exactly the manner you mentioned. I swept the OD of a precision ground dead center in the tailstock. The results exactly matched another independent measurement using an Interapid indicator also held in a 5C collet. Like others here, I use mine all the time, and find it a great help during setups.

Regards,

Chris

Sweep your dead center in the tailstock when it is retracted and then sweep it when it is fully extended. What is it telling you? Don't cheat and reset the dial when you do it.
