Bob,
I haven''t bothered trying to determine a true correlation between the DA and the load needed. I don't get to shoot often enough at various ranges at different DA's to get enough data for a meaningful evaluation. All I want from it is a feel for which way to go to keep the tune.
There does seem to be something in the whole DA thing and the relationship between the load windows. My rifle shoots at around 1.2 grain intervals but appears to be more stable at the upper one, around 30.1 grains with 68 Ultra's seems to be about right usually. At the upper loads if a little vertical creeps in and the DA is lower than usual it seems that an increase is needed and if the DA is higher than usual a decrease in the load is needed. The change seems to usually only be around 0.2 - 0.4 grains either way and the amount of vertical is a good clue to the powder change needed to bring it right.
I don't know that I trust it enough to alter the load with no testing on paper but if some vertical is creeping in it is a good back up so as to not just make the vertical worse by altering the load the wrong way.
I also note the temp and humidity as well as the DA and use all three as a basic guide on what to do. In my rifle the same load has woked well at different ranges with similar DA readings to my home range even though the temp and humidity have been different to my home range.
At the upper window the loads seem to be a lot less fickle. I have shot at windows in the 27, 28, 29 and 30 grain (more or less) windows and the higher the pressure the less fussy the loads seem to be. They do still seem to follow a basic trend relative to DA, temp and humidity, just less so for the hotter loads.
Others say there is no correlation but I believe there is something to it, at least enough that the Kestrel is a helpful tool for somebody like me that has a reasonable knowledge of rifle tuning in general but doesn't have much experience in keeping a 6PPC agging well.
Ideally it'd be nice to read the DA, alter the load and always be in tune, to predict the change and maintain the tune. I don't know it that is possible and it doesn't seem that DA alone is the answer to that ideal situation. For me and for the moment it is a handy tool to back up a gut instinct or to help assess the cure once tune is drifting off. It is certainly better than no tuning aid !
