I am thinking about building a rim fire bench type rifle just for fun. I will shoot a local club match but that will probably be about it. I have a sheane st1000 stock inlet for a rem 700. I am also on a waiting list for a stiller 40X clone. I am thinking Big barrel!! If this project ever goes through this thing will weigh 20 pounds? What the heaviest rim fire rifle allowed in comps? what class would that be? Thanks lee

Other than entering a "my barrel is bigger than your barrel" competition you might want to consider a couple points. First, it probably won't shoot any better than a 10 1/2 lb. gun and second if you have a change of heart you're gonna take a beating come resale time.

Tim is giving you good advice. If you were to go to 10 matches you probably would not see a rifle like you are talking about. If they shot good we would all be shooting one. We shoot what works best and yes what you are talking about has been tried many times.

There was a guy up here in NY shooting an 87lb rail gun. It had a barrel about the diameter of a hoehn tuner and a 3lb tuner that was as big around as a soup can. The barrel was so stiff it could not be tuned, and it didn't shoot as good as our 10.5lb guns. It was, however, the coolest looking gun on the line!

You're better off using a normal size barrel and putting the extra weight in the stock.

barrell

yep look at some pictures of winning rifles. i think joe fredericks rifles are featured over on 6br and just a normal barrell on them. i have a martini with a huge barrell on it made in the 50s i think by a smith by the name of suklee.

it doesnt shoot any better than the other martinis with a target barrell on them.

as one writer stated you will take a beating if you decide to sell it.

thanks guys but i am not to worried about resale, I just gave a shehane st-1000 stock with nothing in it so i thought it might make a good stock for a rimfire. I just want to shoot some club matches and learn to read the wind. basically a fun rifle. it will be 6 months before i even get my stiller rim fire action, so i am sure things and ideas will change. I also didnt know the weight limits or the classifications for rim fire bench matches. Lee
