I've got a Remington 700 with the hole in the receiver nearest to the front sight buggered up and I am in need of a tap.

Where is the best place to get one? What pitch exactly are they? 4-48? 4-44?
I'll need a plug tap and a bottomer wouldnt hurt.

Thanks for the help. I'll order as soon as I get an answer.

6-48? It dosesn't look that big.

It's for the Leupold Scope base mount on front of the receiver.

6-48 it is then...

Thankyou Gentlemen. I appreciate the info.:)

Taps

I priced 6-40, 6-48, 8-40 at all the top industrial supply houses, MSC, Macmaster Carr etc. The 6-40 and 6-48 were less expensive at Brownells. My only guess is that it is a gun industry standard and they must buy a lot of them.

The best prices I have found on the screws are at Forester. I would love to find a less expensive source for 6-40, 6-48, and 8-40 screws.

Factory Remingtons come with a 6-48 scope base holes. If they have to be retapped 8-40 is most common.

Be sure to clean the holes out thoroughly then use a good cutting/tapping lubricant. Back out and clean often especially towards the end. When it begins to tighten up it often is too late. These taps break easily.

Good luck

I'm not a gun smith and only work on my own stuff but on a 1968 Reminton 700ADL I recently bought, I just got through having to use a 6-48 tap to clean up one of the scope mounting screw holes. Sight mounting holes might be different but I checked the threads on the screws for the scope base and all four of them were 6-48.

The cheeper 6-48 taps at Brownells are carbon steel, not HSS. These are easyer to remove if they break in the hole.

I think you're gonna need a bottoming tap unless the barrel has been removed.
