Any suggestions? I am looking at the savage and CZ. Any other ideas?

You might luck up and find a decent Remington 541 for under $500. Probably not an S though - maybe a T.

Another used rifle that could be found for under $500 is the Russian American Armory's CM-2 Cadet.

Otherwise, you seem to barking up the right tree with the CZs and Savages.

Added by edit: Me and two others in my club have fallen for the old Savage Anshcutz Mk 10s and 12s lately. They often can be had for $200 to $375 depending on condition. All three have been passed along now due to mediocre accuracy.

Jetmugg's suggestion is certainly backed by these results from one of our recent local matches. We use the USBR target and the USBR Sporter Class rules to hold a once a month sporter bench rest match. Don't laugh at our scores - we know we have alot to learn. But, the matches have really grown and I have heard of some check books loosening up over the winter. It will be interesting to see what appears in the spring.

Range information near Florence AL

Danny; I see by Your address Your from Florence AL. I'M new to benchrest And wonder just where the range is You shoot at. I'M from Counce, TN and plan to shoot ARA at Sandhill range in Savahanna, TN. But would sure be interested if theres a range around Florence I don't know about. What yardage were the scores You posted shot at ? THANKS ADC Trapper

I shoot an Anchutz 1710 in our local squirrel rifle matches. I know that gun is way out of your budget but it will shoot 244's to 246's on an IR 50/50 target easilly with no modifications.

I bought a stainless action and barrel Savage MK II BTVS for something to do and play with this winter to see if I could make it shoot next year in our squirrel matches. The stainless Savage action is almost a perfect copy of an Anschutz 64. I pillar bedded it.
My first time to the range was shocking. It shot really well. I would say it shoots as good as my Anschutz, but I'll have to wait till the weather gets warmer. It even likes the same ammo of my Anschutz, SK Special Pistol Match, that happens to be made by Lapua.

The Savage stock looks pretty cool with the vent holes, laminated, and contoured cheekpiece.
I haven't been able to find a single shot adapter but it would be really easy to modify the factory magazine by sliding a piece of shimstock in place of a round of ammo.

I have high hopes for this rifle.;)

We shoot our BR matches at 50 yards. We have four concrete benches with a pavilion type cover. We use the USBR rules but we are not a sanctioned USBR club yet (thinkin about it). Our range is located in Sheffield, Alabama in the City of Sheffield's Industrial Park. We have the following rimfire match schedule each month and our matches are open to the public and we do not charge an entry fee.

1st Saturday - Fifty Fifty Sporter (custom local offhand silhouette match) Link: http://rimfireshooting.com/index.php?showforum=69
2nd Saturday - Twenty-five Fifty Pistol (same match at 25 yards with pistols and revolvers) Link: http://rimfireshooting.com/index.php?showforum=70
3rd Saturday - Rimfire Benchrest Match - we use USBR rules and fire their Unlimited, Custom, and Sporter classes. Link:
http://rimfireshooting.com/index.php?showforum=75
4th Saturday - CMP Sporter (three position bullseye match) Link:
http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/rimfire.pdf
5th Saturday(four a year) - Rimfire Raptor Match (bi-pods, 100 yds, little chickens)
Link: http://rimfireshooting.com/index.php?showforum=76

Start time for all matches through March is 9:00 AM.

Unfortunately, this month's BR match (21St) has been cancelled due to the need to conduct new club member orientation sessions.

March should be gorgeous though (optimist). Come shoot with us Trapper.

I tried the Savages but the stocks were too short for me. I have a CZ 453 (about the same as the 452 but with a set trigger) and like it a lot. It shoots best with Winchester high speed ammo.

Best .22 under $500

My first match gun was a Anschutz 64. I still see them under $500, they can be had with a 2 stage trigger as well. My 2 cents.

The Savage BTVS has a 1/2" longer length of pull than my CZ 452 American. Exactly what Savage and CZ are you talking about. The Savage I'm talking about has a laminated thumbhole stock and all stainless barrel and receiver and Accutrigger.

The Savage has a flatter forend and is less likely to roll like the rounded forend CZ 452 American. Rifle Basix makes a drop-in inexpensive trigger.

Actually, I re-measured just now and came up with 13.5" of pull. When I measured it a couple of days ago it was 14.0". Why? I removed that PITA middle blade in the Accu-trigger which made the length of pull 1/2" shorter. Sorry about that.

I went to a gun show today and saw the Russian rifle that Winchester is marketing. It was quite light and it has a hammer-forged barrel that's pretty nice. Price new was around $300.

Cabelas has been selling Remington Model 5 for $189 recently. It's made in Serbia, but has an American birch laminated stock. After doing a bit of cleanup of metal parts and pillar-bedding, my buddie's rifle shoots pretty good. I don't know if it will make weight, though. The action is pretty beefy.

I have both of those imports.

The little Winchester Wildcat (Russian Toz) is tiny (pic below - that Weaver 2.5-7X28 is a little scope and it looks just right on the Wildcat). It is a neat rifle but its best use would be as a kid's or lady's trainer or as a handy pack rifle. With a scope and steel rings it came in at well below six lbs. Comes with one five shot and THREE ten shot plastic magazines. The action is easy to cycle when unloaded but the plastic mags' tension or something else make live round cycling more challenging and when combined with the light weight of the rifle it is not really user friendly for the aforementioned youngsters and ladies. They do okay if they bring it to waist level to cycle. It is not easy for me to cycle from the shoulder - nothing like the seemingly effortless Remington Model 5 or one of my well broken in CZs. I would not recommend this rifle for CMP Sporter competition. The guy I got it from tried it in our first local sanctioned match last year and his results were the reason I own it now. Swapped him a Savage Mk II for it that I was tired of playing with.

Couldn't find any pics of Winchester Wildcat groups but the best I recall it kept Eley Sport (Aguila) well under an inch at 50 yards. I still have it sighted in for that ammo.

The Remington Model 5 (Serbian - Zastava 99) is a bit more of a full sized rifle. I put a somewhat heavy old Japanese manufactured Bushnell Banner on mine in B Square high air rifle rings and it still weighs under 7.5 lbs. Once I removed the globs of lawyer proof red paint from the trigger adjustment screws, a marvelously crisp two pound pull resulted with nothing more than a screw driver needed for the job. The Dick's model that my wife bought me for my 50th birthday a couple of years ago, has a solid hardwood (Walnut for all I know) stock but Remington usually displays a laminated stocked version in their Model 5 ads. The rifle is all steel and wood and it has a nice heft to it.

Interestingly enough, both my Model 5 and a friend's did not care much for the usually accurate standard velocity middle priced ammo like Wolf and SK Std Plus. Tighter groups like the ones below came with cheaper high velocity ammo like CCI Blazers, Mini-Mags, Remington Golden Bullets, and even the usually hopeless Remington Thunderbolts. Kind of a plinker's and squirrel hunter's dream. The only faults I found with the Model 5 were the somewhat dinky and sharp edged metal magazines and the drop in the comb (perfect for its supplied quality open sights however).
