Berger VLD bullet difference

What is the physical difference between a Berger 185 grn VLD bullet
(BC = .556, part # 1246) and a 185 grn Target VLD (BC = .549, part # 1984). I am holding the two in my hand and see no difference whatsoever. The Berger web site was no help (man that is a poor website :().

On their current website, I cannot find #1984. There are two .30 cal. 185s listed. One is a tangent ogive BT; the other is a secant ogive VLD.

I seem to remember reading that Berger brought out the tangent ogive BTs for shooters who prefer a more seating depth tolerant shape, since VLDs have the reputation of being touchy in that area.

It is possible the part#1984 is an old batch that has been sitting on the shelves for a long time. The tech article you lead me to was great. Thanks.
 
The diffence may be the thickness of the jacket. Berger has been slowly introducing bullets with thicker jackets to their product line. Some people had been having problems with their bullets coming apart. Try sending an email to Berger and ask them.

One difference for sure is that the "Target" bullet is a thick jacket vs. the hunting or non-target being the regular jacket thickness. Berger also lowered the claimed BC on several of there bullets recently so that may also be throwing you a curve.
