Berger 130 VLD 6.5mm Barrel Twist?

Any one shooting these bullets at 600 yds and further have a good handle on just what barrel twist is needed to stabilize these properly. Berger says 1:10" on the box, but I was wondering what people are seeing out in use on the range.

This is the biggest and heaviest 6.5 mm bullet I would be using in the cartridge I will be shooting so I was interested in running no faster of a twist than I need. I expect the velocity to be around 2950 fps with these and the wildcat case I will be using.

Any help would be appreciated.

You must have an old lot, you need a 1-9 to shoot those 130 bergers I ordered a 1-10 to shoot them and they keyholed the paper at 100 yds. Berger has since updated there recomended twist rate.

That's why I asked the question. Just looking at the bullets, a 1:10" twist seemed a bit slow to me for those bullets so I thought maybe someone had some practical good or bad experience they could bring to the table to help make an informed decision. I am sorry you had a bad experience with the twist rate but that told me what I need to know. Thanks!

They fly just fine from my 8.5 twist .260 using a 26" tube at 2,875 fps.

I shoot a .260 improved with a 30" barrel that is a 9 twist that shoots them to 3100fps. It shoots great. Ron Tilley

A 1 in 9" twist is the official recommendation.

Hi Eric,
i´m shooting the 140grs VLD moly from a 1:8" Shilen at 3000fps.
Case is a 6,5x243"WSSM......
The groups are fine, but is this the "right" twist ?

Better to err slightly on the side of too fast a twist than to have them barely stabilized. If the bullet is nutating and on the verge of destabilizing, drag is increased and the "VLD" quality has been crippled.

Berger states "For 1 in 9" Twist or Faster" on the top of their box for the 130gr VLD. 1 in 8" should be fine. Let us know how they shoot from your WSSM cartridge.

berger 130 VLD

I have a Cooper 6.5 284 1:9 twist. It shoots the 130 Bergers like a laser, just touching the lands.

Iam shooting the Berger 130 in 6.5x47 lapua with a good supply of RL15 at about 2940 and I get 3/8 to 1/2 inch groups at 100yds. and have shot 1&1/4 inch groups at 600 yds. and this is down a 30 inch 8 twist Hart tube
