Bent Bullet Extractor Pin

All,
I have a set of Larry Blackmon 30 cal. dies and the other day a stuck a bullet. In removing the bullet I bent the bullet extractor pin. I tried to straighten it with no success. I have a piece of O1, 1/16, (.0625”) drill rod and would like to replace the pin. My question is would you harden it? I think it is to soft to use as is.

I might try finding out how hard the original, bent pin was to begin with, by taking a cut on it with a new bastard file, seeing how it cuts, and then trying to match that hardness with the new pin, hardening and tempering.
It might take a few tries...
(Of course guessing that the original pin was made out of 0-1 or something similar...)

Rick,
I am with you if the pin was hard it would have broken not bend.

I'd harden it. I've used some piano wire of the right size that worked well in it's current state of hardness. You might try that, first.

Isn't drill rod already hardened ?

Very little, actually it's usually tempered back to accommodate being able to work with it. It can be hardened quite hard, but most is received slightly harder than cold rolled steel. It can be bought pre hardened, but in most applications, you wouldn't want it to be. In the case of the ejector pin in bullet point dies, I'd want it in the C45-50 range. In that state of hardness, it'll still bend but be substantially tougher. FWIW, quality hand screwdrivers are an example of something in that range.--Mike

Drill Rod

I have bent my extractor pin several times. I replaced it with 1/16
drill rod and had no problem.

Yep..

It happens... Bend my ejection pin sometimes while getting the punch adjusted to just the inside diam of the point forming and "stab" the lead core and a bit more umph on the handle = bent ejector... So.... >> Get extra piano wire to make replacement pins.

Changing to diff jacket lengths and or existing jacket with different core lengths (weights) make bent pins bit more common.

aaronraad,
I found a piece of music wire stock and made a pin. I need to put a little Loctite (blue) on the end to hold it in place. I think it will work OK. Better than the old bent one.
Thank you all.
