Benchrest targets

Hi guys.. I'm new to this site and hope to glean a lot of info from you all in the future.
A little about me.. I'm a member of a rifle club in the UK and run 2 "F" class comps for the club shot over a 12 month period. The distances are 100, 200 & 600 yds. The targets are scaled according to distance. I run 2 classes, those being FTR (.223 & .308 only ) & allcomers.
One of the targets i use is a typical benchrest target with the familiar bull and rings with a small square above the bull on the outer rings.
I'm often asked what the square is for and to be honest , i dont really know. I believe it's used as an aim point so one can center scope cross hairs upon.
Is this true? If so, why is it placed at the top of the score rings and not the center?
I'm running a new one day Varmint rifle comp next year with a possibility of a new benchrest comp too though specialist rifles in my club are non existent.
We have a a few sako 75s. a TRG22, a couple of T3s and a few Howas> Nothing that you could call special though those of us with sako & tikka rifles can manage 1/4 moa on a good day.. We'll have to see if benchrest is a starter for our club with factory rifles.. I hope it is..
I'd appreciate a reply about the target if poss..
Many thanks..

Streeker,
From what I've been told the black square was first used because the early scopes were of much lower power than what is used today and it was an aid in aiming. Can't say for sure but it's not used today to speak of and is mainly there because it's always been there.

One thing I do know is that you don't want any part of your group up there simply because it makes it more difficult to measure. This can, I suppose, be good or bad, depending on which way it was measured. I've measured thousands of targets and when a group is in the black square the scorer can only guess to some degree where the edge of the hole is. We don't miss it far but when first and second place is often determined by a couple of 'tenths' it can get confusing.

I have seen the mirage so bad (Midland, TX, for example) that I couldn't see the black square at 200 yards with a 45X Leupold Competition scope so even the big black square is of no help sometimes.
