bench pistol/varmit pistol scope question

Scopes are quite lacking in precision bench pistol shooting "benchrest." It seems optics are the issue and there is no good way to get around that. I have inherited a bullberry custom 6ppc pistol..it has a rifle scope on it. This seems quite awkward but seemly common? The higher power pistol scopes seem to be quite dark with small fields (as you are far from the scope) in my research. Any input or thoughts? Any scope suggestions that I can look at? My goal is precision not varmit hunting.

Everyone who is serious about pistol Benchrest or precision will use rifle optics.
All of my pistols are used with everything from 24x to 50x and if they are recoil heavy…you just line up on the target and back off to the point where your eye won’t be bludgeoned by the scope or pistol as it recoils. You may lose almost all of your field of vision, but with a little practice it’s not hard to get comfortable with the procedure.

Your other problem will be bag handling. With all but the lightest recoiling pistols, its difficult, and impossible for some, to get a pistol to ride the bags with consistency.
It takes meticulous attention to detail as regards forend and grip placement on the bags as well as a consistent placement and grip pressure with your dominant hand.

Good Luck. It’s a lot of fun to shoot bug holes with a pistol after the technique is mastered.

Thank you, that is what I seem to be finding. Is there any one scope you would recommend to start with?

That’s a very difficult question to answer since I don’t know your equipment, budget or how seriously you intend to pursue this endeavor. It could vary from: “anything you have available to in excess of a couple of thousand for a March scope”.

Bare in mind also, this is an internet forum and my advice as well as anyone else’s should be taken with a “grain of salt”. There’s a lot of BS in cyberspace.

15" barrel, break action contenter type. I guess i could start with the typical 36x weavers etc...Just looking for advice regarding some of the challenges of rifle scope shooting on a pistol and if there is one that may be better than another. thanks

Howdy ,
Sounds like a Encore ...what scope was / is on this now?
Most ,If not all Guys shooting these rigs are shooting xp100's or custom action bolt rigs .As Husker has mentioned ,pistols have there own set of challenges... but when you try and compete in the small group game with a Thompson Center ...Contender or Encore .. its a whole nother game.
A break action gun ,like the encore has it own set of rules , On Top Of the ones everbody else shooting bolt rigs has to deal with .
It sure is a hoot when you do get one shooting well though ,
good shooting

yea will be more challenging than my left hand bolt striker as you have to keep altering it's position to load/unload. o well, if i wanted easy i would just take a pencil and poke holes in the target!

Couple of mine ...

love them...can you tell me what you think your favorite scope is on those?
Will have to get a pic of my up

Okay, here are a few suggestions, generalizations, and thoughts off the top of my head in no particular order.

Since the recoil generated by the 6PPC is pretty light, you may not have a problem with cheaper scopes failing, but I’ve always believed “you get what you pay for” and consider the Weaver T24/T36 good scopes for the money.
The T36 on a pistol will be the most difficult to master because of the high magnification in conjunction with the diminished field of view and lessened brightness of a Leupold, Nightforce, March, etc.
I think 16x is the minimum for serious accuracy work but you’ll get many opinions for either more or less.
You may want to consider a variable scope if there’s any chance you want to use the pistol for other than the bench or want to work your way up in magnification. With a T36, the gun will be pretty much useless for anything else unless you become very proficient with it.

I hope your break open Contender is a G2 or Encore variant because the backthrust generated by a case with the head diameter of the 6PPC is not safe in the old style Contenders. I have more info if you need it.

Trigger and headspace issues with the Contenders also need to be investigated if you want to strive for ultimate accuracy with this type of firearm.

Here’s one of the best forums on the net for pistol specific questions on shooting break open firearms:

Another good source of info is Mike Bellms site:

Vince,

Glad you joined in with the pic of your Block in 5.6x50R.

I’m sure you must remember Vern Juenke’s Contender pistols based on that RWS case and the wildcats he developed. I had several of them way back when. I think it’s the ideal chambering in the old style Contenders for a mix of velocity and accuracy.

Again ,
Husker has given you Excellent resources.... and Info...I'll say follow his lead and check out the 2 sites he suggested... Both excellent..
I use variables on my Long Rannge Rigs , and T24/T36 on my Bench Rigs . I also like and use Burris 3x12 handgun scopes ... modified to use a Davis 3x Boosters .
I am in the process of converting a couple Pistols to use Unertl scopes..should be fun.
Be safe , Have Fun

looks like it is based on an encore frame. the main pivot pin is a bit under 0.450 or so and the hammer can be cocked/recocked without breaking open the frame. Barrel breech is about 1". The trigger work has been done...it is very light, to the point that I made sure to check it that i couldnt slam fire it. The current scope is a simmons 6,5-20x 50 variable. It is ok, prob will swap it onto one of my match AR's. I have to get dies and some brass before I can go much further

Vince........all I can say is.......when somebody....

walks in after the "Little Woman" sees THAT picture w/the BOLT on the "COFFEE TABLE" they'll only be able to say.....OMG

Yup, it sounds like an Encore. Factory specs are 1” for the barrel where it seats in the frame and a hinge pin hole of 7/16” (.4375”).

Here’s another link you may find informative: http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek055.html

Hope you have fun with it and let us know how it shoots when you get the chance.

Lol

I think , for awhile the scope you have on it would work ,it would give you a scope that would be functional..but would give you the opportunity to play and have some fun ,and with the research recommended here ...give you a chance to use these new skills...just a thought.

shoot and have fun

Brian ,
I think my wife :mad:and I already had that Discussion ...LOL . I seem to remember something about a coffee table:rolleyes:....LOL......

Husker , great advice again ..mine use Bellm springs and my barrels are made by Mike Sirois .;):D of Ott .

will do guys..thanks...this is my first 6 ppc..so no dies yet..never fireformed (and as this is my only 6ppc i will have to start with this barrel..but whatever..it will probably still shoot better than i can) just wish i could head down to the local shop and buy dies and brass and start!

wow looks like a pistol and a rail gun had a child..very nice...I can see the forend will slide..does the whole rear of the rest slide (say on bearings) or does the grip slide across the top.

thanks
