Bench gun? Anschutz? Suhl?

Hi all,

I've been enjoying my Kidd 10/22 setup (trigger & barrel) quite a bit, but I still have an urge to step into a gun that is much more accurate than I am. I know I still have some learning to do with the Kidd rifle - but probably not a huge amount. I routinely shoot .4" with it and figure it can do .3" pretty easily.

I've been knocking around the idea of buying an Anschutz or even a friends Feinwerkbau but I can never get fully behind the idea. Mostly because I have been looking at position/prone guns (which I love) but honestly, I shoot BR 95% of the time. For some reason it is hard for me to invest much money in a new BR gun because - in all honesty - I'll eventually find something else that I like to do. I'd love to buy a nice Silhouette gun (54.18) but then I don't know how great it will be on the bench! Have you ever fought yourself on the question to buy a bench gun or not? How'd you resolve it?

If I do decide to buy a bench gun - I want to get something which has really good resale. I'd also like something which is a shooter from the get go - I don't want to tweak the gun much. The Anschutz 64 BR appeals because it is a lovely gun, looks to shoot well, and within my price range at $1125. There are also guns like Suhls to consider. Do you think the Anschutz BR would be a good choice? Why or why not?

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreciate this forum. I'm on Rimfire Central as well - but this place has its own style about it..

If you want a gun ready to go at the bench, buy a used and proven bench rifle. It will cost more than the $1125.00. On the up side, you will be able to sell it for what you have in it at some point down the road. You'll be a lot farther ahead in the long run.

You're one step away from getting the rifle of your dreams. Don't compromise, go all the way. You won't regret it.

b/r rifle

go to benchrest central rimfire ads there are always top b/r rifles for sale there.

most of these rifles are owned by champion shooters who are constantly seeking more out of their rifles thus these for sale.

dan killough also deals in used b/r rifles at good prices.

good luck

I recently bought a Rem 40X through the Classifieds on this board and am really happy with it. Price was very reasonable and I got the whole package.

Today, I shot it at 50 yards outdoors for the first time and am very happy witht the groups and individual targets shot, even though conditions were less than ideal. I'd heartily recommend using the Classifieds from this board or some other trusted boards.

I have a Win 52C that has taken considerable time and money, not to mention frustration to make it shoot well. It cost $500, but I've spent another $1,000 on it, but over a period of several years. It was much more painful that my recent purchase and I don't recommend it unless you don't have the money to do otherwise.

Buying from a fellow competitor is usually a good investment. Some folks are getting out of the game, while others are moving up to more expensive, or just different rifles. We all like something new to shoot once in a while.

I also sold an Anschutz 54 here about the same time I bought the 40X. It was not a fully-developed bench rifle and it would have taken more money and time than I was willing to spend at this time, but the person buying it is not a competitor and loves shooting it the way it is.

anschutz 54

I have an anschutz 54ms

My dad and I each bought one of these around 1980....it is a single shot.

Does anyone here have any info on this rifle.

thanks

As long as you get a good price on a match 54 barreled action, you can always buy a BR stock for it. For example, McMillan and Kelbly make stocks that are Match 54 ready.
